O resultado contra o time mais fraco da chave levou a equipe aos seis pontos, permanecendo no terceiro lugar. Universidad de Chile e Estudiantes, que se enfrentam às 21h de amanhã, têm sete e seis pontos, respectivamente. O lanterna Carabobo ficou com um.
O alvinegro deu indícios de que até teria uma vitória tranquila, quando Vitinho apareceu na área e aproveitou uma falha do goleiro para marcar no rebote, no primeiro tempo. Porém, o jogo ganhou contornos dramáticas na etapa final, quando Aponte igualou o marcador de maneira surpreendente, colocando “a cereja no bolo” em mais uma atuação preocupante.
O grito de alívio só veio aos 46 minutos, quando Cuiabano cortou a esquerda da área e chutou cruzado para decretar a vitória. Aliás, foi o primeiro triunfo de Paiva fora de casa, no primeiro jogo que a equipe balançou as redes longe do Nilton Santos.
Agora, a equipe tem dois jogos decisivos restantes na fase de grupos, contra Estudiantes e Universidad de Chile. Na quarta-feira que vem, dia 14 de abril, recebe o time argentino. Antes, porém, tem jogo contra o Internacional, às 20h do sábado, pelo Brasileirão.
