MIAMI — The Los Angeles Dodgers made re-signing Teoscar Hernández a priority this winter because the slugger brings stability. Now, with the Dodgers placing Hernández on the injured list Tuesday with a groin strain, the Dodgers’ deep lineup will endure its first test.
Hernández initially felt tightness in his left leg while reaching out to catch a fly ball in the third inning of Monday’s win over the Miami Marlins. Hernández, who has appeared in 187 of the Dodgers’ 197 games the last two seasons, immediately exited the game. On Tuesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Hernández had suffered a Grade 1 adductor strain.
The Dodgers recalled OF James Outman and placed OF Teoscar Herńandez on the injury list with a left groin strain.

The Dodgers called up James Outman to take Hernández’s spot on the active roster and started him in center field Tuesday, while primary center fielder Andy Pages shifted over to Hernández’s spot in right field.
Outman was chosen over fellow 40-man roster outfield option Esteury Ruiz. Outman was the Dodgers’ Opening Day center fielder in 2023 and 2024, but endured a brutal start to his season in Triple-A Oklahoma City (.152 through his first 15 games) after exploring some swing changes over the winter. The numbers have rebounded some: he has an .830 OPS through 146 plate appearances this year in the minors.

Calling up Outman represents at least one solution until Tommy Edman returns from the injured list. Edman could play more center field if Hernández misses extended time, perhaps giving Korean utility man Hyeseong Kim a chance to stick around longer than originally expected when he was called up with Edman’s ankle injury.
It would be difficult for any amalgamation of players to replace Hernández’s production offensively. The two-time All-Star has been among the club’s most consistent hitters, leading the major leagues with 34 runs batted in while also hitting .315 with nine home runs. The 32-year-old is in the first year of his three-year, $66 million deal he signed to return to the Dodgers in the wake of their World Series title a year ago.
