The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said the incident is being treated as accidental.
On Saturday, his family spoke out for the first time to thank the public and offer an update on his condition.
“Although Kav’s journey is far from over, we have hope. Your prayers and positive thoughts are needed now more than ever.” – Taryn Markwood, Kavan’s sister
“I’m incredibly grateful to share that Kav is making remarkable progress: he was extubated this morning, was able to say my name and even squeezed my hand,” his sister Taryn Markwood said. These small victories are monumental for us.
Markwood attended Walsh University in Ohio
After studying at Walsh, Markwood transferred to Wheeling University in West Virginia, where he was part of the football team in 2023.
Amy Thompson, who was sitting next to Markwood at the game, told Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE:
When he jumped out of his seat to celebrate, it looked like he had his hands on the fence in front of us, something I had also done several times during the match
“I think the momentum with which he jumped out of his seat and the way he grabbed the railing made me feel as if he had catapulted himself over it.”
