Promessa do tênis morre atropelado aos 18 anos meses após família perder casa nos incêndios de Los Angeles

Uma das promessas americanas do tênis, Braun Levi morreu aos 18 anos após ser atropelado enquanto caminhava com amigos pela Sepulveda Boulevard, em Manhattan Beach. As autoridades locais apontam que o jovem tenista foi atingido por uma motorista que estava com sinais de embriaguez.

Os policiais foram acionados por volta de 1h deste domingo, no horário local, e encontraram Levi já caído na rua. Ele chegou a ser levado para o hospital, mas não resistiu aos ferimentos, de acordo com comunicado do Departamento de Polícia de Manhattan Beach.

Levi foi “titular do time principal da Loyola Tennis por quatro anos e se consolidou como um dos atletas-estudantes mais talentosos da história do programa, tendo acabado de vencer seu quarto campeonato consecutivo da liga, em 29 de abril”, publicou o setor de atletismo da Loyola High School nas redes sociais.

Além de brilhar no tênis, Levi era membro do Conselho Estudantil, líder de retiro do Kairos e gerente do time de vôlei da universidade.

De acordo com o Los Angeles Times, Levi foi morto poucos meses depois que a casa de sua família foi destruída no incêndio Palisades, no Condado de Los Angeles, em janeiro.

— Sua família perdeu a casa e se mudou para South Bay — disse Jamal Adams, diretor e presidente eleito da Loyola High School de Los Angeles, à revista People. — Nos curtos cinco meses de 2025, a família passou por muita coisa.

Motorista acusada tinha habilitação suspensa

Levi se formaria no mês que vem e tinha planos de ingressar na Universidade da Virgínia em setembro, segundo o LA Times.

A polícia local detalhou que a motorista Jenia Belt, de 33 anos, foi presa em 4 de maio. Ela vai responder à Justiça por acusações de dirigir sob influência de álcool e cometer homicídio.

A imprensa local não conseguiu contatar a defesa da mulher. Registros públicos obtidos pelo LA Times mostram que a habilitação dela estava suspensa por causa de um caso anterior de dirigir embriagada, em 2023. As acusações foram retiradas após um acordo com a promotoria, mas ela seguia impedida de assumir o volante.
