Reds’ Tyler Callihan departs game with broken forearm after crashing into wall

ATLANTA — Cincinnati Reds rookie Tyler Callihan left Monday’s game after he ran into the wall in left field at Truist Park trying to make a diving catch. Playing in his fourth big-league game, the 24-year-old Callihan walked off the field under his own power, but he appeared to suffer a serious arm injury.

With a runner on first and two out in the third inning, Matt Olson lined an opposite-field fly ball down the left-field line. Callihan raced over and attempted to make a catch just inside the line. The ball was briefly in his glove before he collided awkwardly and at full speed with the padded wall in foul territory, the force of the collision bending his left arm at a gruesome angle as his entire body crashed into the wall.

The ball popped out and he immediately took off his glove and grabbed his left arm with his right hand, grimacing in pain as Olson circled the bases. Callihan lay writhing on the ground, the ball a few feet away from him, until trainers reached him. After a minute or two, he was helped off the field, Callihan walking and holding his arm as he made his way to the dugout.

The play was initially ruled no catch, and after the Reds challenged the call, it was upheld, the two-run homer extending Atlanta’s lead to 4-0.

Injuries have been part of Callihan’s path to the big leagues.

Drafted out of high school in the third round in 2019, Callihan played in rookie ball that year, but he, like everyone else in the minors, sat out the entire 2020 season due to COVID-19. Just 23 games into the 2021 season, Callihan tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow making a diving play in the infield and missed the rest of the season.

The next spring, Callihan was involved in a car accident and suffered a torn ligament in his thumb, limiting him to 88 games in 2022.

After a healthy 2023, Callihan broke his finger trying to bunt last season, costing him two months of play.

Callihan hit .271/.345/.413 with eight homers in 69 games for Double-A Chattanooga last season before being promoted to Triple A at the end of the season. In four games there, he recorded five hits.

After being added to the 40-man roster this offseason, Callihan was in big-league camp this spring. He had 27 hits in 24 games with the Bats to start the season, hitting .303/.410/.528 before being called up last week when the Reds put veteran infielder Jeimer Candelario on the injured list. Callihan’s first big-league hit came Saturday on an RBI single.

Chelsea beat the champions but are still 19 points behind. Can they challenge next season?

There is nothing like a convincing win against the champions to make fans begin to dream a little. Well, be a little more optimistic about the future at least.Chelsea’s first victory against Liverpool in 11 attempts is comfortably their best result of the season. Yes, people can point to Arne Slot not picking his first-choice XI, but Enzo Maresca’s side were playing with the pressure of needing three points to help their bid for Champions League football via a top-five finish. They duly delivered.AdvertisementMuch was made of Liverpool perhaps being affected by celebrating their 20th championship, secured the previous weekend, a little too much. And yet Chelsea’s preparation was far from ideal too. Granted, Djurgarden did not provide the stiffest opposition in the first leg of their Conference League semi-final in Stockholm on Thursday night, as the 4-1 scoreline demonstrates. But […]

Leeds United’s 33 year-wait to experience the unbridled joy of a title parade is over

The impact of May 5, 2025 in Leeds may not hit home until Reeva Saville takes her own children to Elland Road in 2055. There were sights, sounds and smells they will never forget.AdvertisementThese are core life experiences for a football fan. They have to be treasured, savoured and locked away in the memory. Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool legacy question and why so many fans are angry

Before every Liverpool home game, the team bus turns off Walton Lane and crawls into Anfield Road, where fans line the street, waving flags, blaring horns and filling the air with red smoke. The streets around the stadium feature murals paying homage to Liverpool heroes past and present: from legends of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Roger Hunt, Ian St John, Ray Clemence and Phil Neal, to the modern era with Steven Gerrard, Jurgen Klopp, Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and others.AdvertisementTrent Alexander-Arnold was only 20 years old when he was honoured with a mural on the end of Sybil Street. It’s a beauty, a huge picture of him next to the words he breathlessly uttered after the Champions League triumph in Madrid in 2019: “I’m just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come […]

Lamine Yamal – What people who know football say about Barcelona’s teenage star

Asked about Lamine Yamal in the aftermath of the teenager’s scintillating display against Inter, his Barcelona coach Hansi Flick called the winger a “genius”. Others went further, suggesting he is Barcelona’s best player, the finest 17-year-old in modern times, or simply the world’s best footballer.AdvertisementFlick added a note of caution to his praise, saying: “It can’t just be a one-off. That’s what I want from him and all the players. The ability to improve. You have to work hard. To reach the level of (Cristiano) Ronaldo or (Lionel) Messi, or other great players.”But what is it that makes Yamal so good? And what is it he still needs to improve? Before he faces Inter again in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final we asked people who spend much of their lives watching or developing footballers for their observations of […]

Inter have achieved extraordinary things over the past five years, so why are they still underrated?

Henrikh Mkhitaryan tried to see the funny side.He joked that next time he’d tell the kitman to give him a smaller shoe size. Perhaps the chiropodist could trim his toenails even closer, too. Millimetres were all that separated Mkhitaryan’s goal from standing at Montjuic last week. Had semi-automated offside not detected his boots were a European 43 (that’s a 9 in the UK and a 9.5 in the U.S.), Inter would have won 4-3 in Barcelona.AdvertisementLife’s a game of inches. While Mkhitaryan wrestled with the contradiction of how justice delivered by technology could still feel like injustice, others sank back into their seats on that pine-scented hill overlooking Barcelona and muttered to themselves: “Damn!”Lamine Yamal had just given a performance guaranteed to remain impressed on the minds of everyone who witnessed it. His sleight of foot hid the ball from […]

Should we really be surprised Arsenal are playing catch up in the Champions League?

Outside the Emirates Stadium a few days before this semi-final series got underway, a representative from French television was asking around, trying to get a feel for the two clubs in advance of this intriguing tie. There was, he reckoned, a special connection. Here are two substantial football institutions, from two of the great cities of the world, both still waiting to bask in the radiance of a first Champions League success. His turn of phrase was sharp enough to make both clubs wince. Were Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal in some way “loser brothers”? Ooof.AdvertisementOne is about to get closer to potentially tearing themselves away from that painful association. The likelihood is it will be PSG, able to host the second leg with a one goal advantage against an opponent whose mood has been bashed in the past week, although football […]
