Shedeur Sanders‘s unexpected fall to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft caught many by surprise. But now with the Cleveland Browns, can he finally become a starter? An icon of the sport warns him where he needs to direct his focus.
Once projected as a potential early-round pick, Sanders waited until the 144th overall selection to hear his name called, but instead of dwelling on the drop, the former Colorado Buffalo standout responded with ambition.
Showing an eagerness to embrace Cleveland, it’s a positive sign but on the competitive side, some believe he may be aiming too high, too soon as the former wide receiver, Keyshawn Johnson, recommends he needs to target becoming the starter before taking over the NFL.
Johnson, champion in 2002/03, has consistently voiced support for Sanders, even defending him from pre-draft criticism but when the 23-year-old spoke of Super Bowl aspirations, Johnson took a more grounded stance.
What Travis Hunter Means For Jaguars’ Defense
“Yes, the Browns will look absolutely smart,” Keyshawn told Speak. “I want to say it loud and clear. I’m back at Shedeur. I don’t need people telling me that I’m hating on Shedeur, because that’s not the case, but I’ll say it again.
“I don’t want him talking about the Super Bowl. Focus in on winning the starting quarterback job.”
Johnson does back Sanders. When quarterback coaches anonymously criticized Shedeur during the pre-draft process, calling him “brash” and questioning his professionalism, Johnson pushed back by insisting the youngster is unique and with flair.
Can Sanders become the Browns’ QB1?
However, the path to QB1 in Cleveland is anything but clear. The Browns have been searching for a long-term answer at quarterback since 1999, often with disappointing results – most recently from their blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson.
While the defense carried the team to an 11-6 record last season, the offense remains unsettled and now Sanders enters a crowded quarterback room as the front office tries to get a grip of the situation by volume.
He will compete for the spot alongside veteran Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, and espite the media spotlight on Sanders, Browns leadership appears more enthusiastic about Gabriel.
“We really felt strongly about Dillon throughout this process,” Kevin Stefanski, head coach, told reporters. “You know, I think he’s a really strong, really, really good prospect.
“You know, that’s not to say that we didn’t meet with other quarterbacks that we thought were really talented players and good people.
“But we felt strongly about Dillon. We think he’s an excellent player and felt like he was the most appropriate player to pick for both.”
For Sanders, dialing back the supreme confidence of championship rhetoric and focusing on outperforming Gabriel may be the clearest route to earning respect, and eventually, the starting job.
