After months of anticipation surrounding Shedeur Sanders‘ NFL future, the former Colorado star finally found a home in the 2025 NFL Draft-but not in the way many expected.
Once projected as a first-round pick, Sanders slipped all the way to the fifth round, where the Cleveland Browns selected him at No. 144 overall.

The fallout from this slide has been swift, with former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III (RGIII) delivering one of the harshest assessments yet.
“He’s being set up to fail,” RGIII said, sparking debate about Sanders‘ development path in Cleveland.

Crowded quarterback room fuels doubt
At the center of the criticism is the Browns‘ existing quarterback situation. Deshaun Watson, still under a massive contract and expected to remain the starter, sits atop the depth chart.
Behind him, 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel and veteran backup Jameis Winston further crowd the position group.
With five quarterbacks already competing for time-including Sanders-analysts are questioning how the rookie will find the space and support he needs to grow.
RGIII, who experienced his own ups and downs in the NFL, believes the lack of a clear development plan for Sanders is concerning.
“If you’re gonna draft a guy with that kind of potential, you better be ready to invest in his development,” RGIII warned.
Adding fuel to the fire, some scouts have raised concerns about Sanders‘ readiness for the pros. An unnamed assistant coach was quoted saying: “He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. But the biggest thing is he’s not that good.”
Such harsh assessments, fair or not, add pressure to a situation already mired in uncertainty.
Character, confidence, and controversy
Off the field, Sanders has attracted attention-and some criticism-for his high-profile lifestyle. Earlier this year, he was seen posing with a $1 million Louis Vuitton briefcase.
While many fans admired the confidence, others, including NFL legend Tom Brady, voiced concern.
“Less Rolls Royces, more film,” Brady reportedly advised, calling on Sanders to refocus his energy on preparation and professionalism.
Despite the critiques, Sanders comes into the league with strong collegiate credentials, having thrown for over 3,200 yards and 27 touchdowns last season for Colorado. His leadership and poise were a major factor in the Buffaloes’ improved performance under his father, head coach Deion Sanders.
Still, the NFL is an entirely different arena. With the odds stacked against him and little room for error, Sanders will have to silence critics with performance-both on and off the field.
Whether the Browns truly have a long-term vision for Shedeur Sanders remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the rookie’s NFL journey is off to a challenging start.
