Jung Hoo Lee belted a two-run homer in the third inning and added an RBI single during a nine-run 11th, lifting the visiting San Francisco Giants to a 14-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

Matt Chapman added a two-run single in the 11th to join Lee with a three-hit performance. Heliot Ramos had four hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Giants, who squandered a two-run lead in the ninth inning.

San Francisco, however, ignited the fireworks in the 11th.

Patrick Bailey’s single to center off Ryan Pressly (2-2) plated Christian Koss, and Brett Wisely’s bunt allowed Ramos to give San Francisco a 7-5 lead. Pressly walked his next batter before hitting Willy Adames with a pitch to drive in another run.

Singles by Lee, Chapman and Wilmer Flores extended the Giants’ advantage to 12-5. Ramos’ RBI double and Bailey’s sacrifice fly capped the scoring against Pressly, who allowed nine runs (eight earned) on five hits without getting an out.

Erik Miller (2-0), who allowed Kyle Tucker’s game-tying RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning, permitted one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Giants erupted for 16 hits en route to their fourth win in five games.

Signed to a one-year, $15 million contract, Justin Verlander allowed just three runs on five hits in five innings and was in line to pick up his first win of the season. Ryan Walker, however, issued two walks and an RBI single to Justin Turner in the ninth before Miller surrendered an RBI single to Tucker.

Chicago’s Miguel Amaya launched a two-run homer in the third inning and Jon Berti had an RBI single in the fifth.

San Francisco scratched in a pair of runs in the second inning before doubling the advantage in the third, courtesy of Lee depositing a 2-1 fastball from Colin Rea over the wall in right field. Lee’s homer was his fourth of the season and first since he went deep on two occasions against the New York Yankees on April 13.

Chicago halved the deficit on Amaya’s third homer of the season before the teams traded runs.

Why changing managers won’t fix the Pirates’ bigger problems

Rowan Kavner MLB Writer <!--> --> Off to the same miserable record they had through 38 games five years ago, in what was supposed to represent the start of a rebuild in Pittsburgh, the Pirates tossed manager Derek Shelton overboard on Thursday.  At the end of the 2019 season, new general manager Ben Cherington tabbed Shelton as the skipper to right the ship of a Pirates team that had not been to the playoffs since 2015. In year one under the new regime, Pittsburgh began the COVID-shortened 2020 season 12-26 and finished it 19-41. Five seasons later, in the midst of another 12-26 start, with the Pirates still in search of their first winning season since 2018 after finishing no better than fourth place since the front-office shakeup, they relieved Shelton of his duties. The decision was understandable.  ADVERTISEMENT <!-->Taking over for Clint Hurdle […]

FCS heading toward 12-game regular-season schedule starting in 2026

FCS programs are one step from increasing their regular-season football schedule in 2026 after the NCAA FCS oversight committee approved a recommendation for an annual 12-game campaign. The recommendation provides for a standard 13-week schedule, which opens on the final Thursday in August each year.AdvertisementCurrently, FCS programs’ schedules fluctuate on the calendar. In years when 12 weeks separate Labor Day weekend from the FCS playoff selection show — which airs the Sunday before Thanksgiving — FCS teams play 11 games. Can Nick Saban and a Texas billionaire fix college sports? What we know about their vision
