LAS VEGAS — The Edmonton Oilers’ second-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights couldn’t have started much worse.
But it couldn’t have ended much better.
Edmonton erased an early 2-0 deficit, completely taking over in a 4-2 Game 1 victory Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Zach Hyman scored the game-winner, ripping a shot from the top of the right circle past Adin Hill with 3:02 left in the game. Connor Brown scored an insurance goal 75 seconds later, leaving the crowd — and the Golden Knights — stunned.

Hyman’s winner was triggered by a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins takeaway off Brandon Saad in the Oilers’ end. Some crisp passing allowed a clean Edmonton entry, and Nugent-Hopkins found Evander Kane, who got the puck to Hyman for the wrister.
Vegas captain Mark Stone scored twice in the first nine minutes to give the Golden Knights an early lead. He was the beneficiary of a fortunate bounce on the game’s opening goal. William Karlsson tipped Shea Theodore’s shot from the point toward the Edmonton net, where it ricocheted off Stone’s skate and in.

On Stone’s second goal, he fooled Oilers netminder Calvin Pickard with a quick release and a low shot that slipped underneath Pickard’s pads. Stone matched his goal total from the first round series in the opening 20 minutes of this one. Jack Eichel picked up his fifth assist of the playoffs on the play, driving Edmonton’s defense back before dropping the puck to Stone for the goal. Stone’s 35th and 36th playoff goals tied him with Jonathan Marchessault for the most in Golden Knights franchise history.
Edmonton pushed back with a goal by Corey Perry — assisted by Connor McDavid — near the end of the first period, followed by a dominant second period where the Oilers outshot Vegas 12-1. Hill stood tall for Vegas in net, making several key saves on the penalty kill to maintain the lead entering the third period.
Hill ended with 26 saves while Pickard stopped 15 of 17 for Edmonton.
The Golden Knights fall to 11-7 all-time in Game 1s. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak in series-opening games that dated back to the Stanley Cup run in 2023. Vegas is 4-2 in series all-time after losing Game 1.
This is just the fourth Game 1 win for the Oilers in the McDavid and Draisaitl era in 15 occurrences. They’re 2-1 in series in this scenario.
