The resurgence of Cincinnati Reds infielder Noelvi Marte has been put on pause with Marte heading to the injured list with a left oblique strain.
Marte was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup against the Atlanta Braves with what was described as soreness in his left side. The move to the IL is retroactive to May 5, and the team recalled outfielder Rece Hinds in his place.

Hinds, 24, has .281/.343/.554 with eight home runs and 12 stolen bases at Triple-A Louisville this season. He made his big-league debut with the Reds last season and was named National League Player of the Week for his first week in the big leagues, hitting .426 with nine of his 11 hits over his first six games going for extra bases, including five home runs. He finished the season hitting .261/.333/.717 with five homers in 24 games.
The right-handed Hinds spent the first month of the minor-league season as the Bats’ everyday center fielder.
Marte, who had a disastrous 2024, started the season in Louisville before getting called up to the big leagues twice last month. In 19 games with the Reds this season, he has hit .294/.342/.515.
With Jeimer Candelario still on the IL and Spencer Steer limited to first base, Santiago Espinal started at third base the last two games. Gavin Lux started one game this year at third base and appeared in another.
