Hokejisté Sparty se zúčastní Spengler Cupu, který se pořádá od roku 1923, již pojedenácté v historii. V letech 1962 a 1963 ho dokázali ovládnout. Před třemi roky došli až do finále, ovšem v nájezdech padli s domácím celkem Ambri-Piotta, a tak neprolomili české prokletí na tomto turnaji. V samostatné historii totiž český tým ještě neslavil ani jedno celkové vítězství, naposledy se v roce 1982 radovala jihlavská Dukla.
To Pražané budou chtít změnit, nabídku od organizátorů rádi přijali. „Pozvali nás po velice úspěšné základní části. Taková pozvánka se zkrátka neodmítá. Účast na turnaji je pro Spartu velice prestižní, uděláme maximum pro to, abychom navázali na úspěšné účasti našich předchůdců,“ uvedl pro klubový web generální ředitel Petr Vosmík.
Účast na 97. ročníku tradičního turnaje si pochvaloval také sportovní ředitel Tomáš Divíšek. „Pro spoustu hráčů je to něco, co chtějí během své kariéry alespoň jednou zažít. Atmosféra Spenglerova poháru je prostě speciální. Navíc je to skvělá příprava na rozhodující fázi sezony. Top soupeři, vysoká nadmořská výška, navíc skvělá příležitost strávit společný čas se spoluhráči a rodinou,“ oceňoval Divíšek.
Turnaje, který se koná na ikonickém zimním stadionu v Davosu, se zúčastní také domácí tým, pak další švýcarský celek Fribourg-Gotterón, a výběr Kanady. Zbývající dvě účastnická místa pořadatelé oznámí v následujících týdnech.
Spartu podobně jako před třemi roky, a stejně jako předchozí dvě sezony Pardubice, čeká velice náročný trojboj. Vedle Tipsport extraligy a Spengler Cupu totiž hokejisty z hlavního města čekají rovněž boje v Lize mistrů.
