Sie sahen schon wie der klare Sieger aus. Die Veolia Towers führten im Duell gegen Erzrivale Niners Chemnitz mit 22 Punkten. Doch im letzten Viertel verspielten die Hamburger den sicheren Vorsprung und verloren noch mit 88:93 (50:35).
Die vierte Pleite in Serie im Endspurt der Hauptrunde der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga und mit sehr großer Wahrscheinlichkeit auch das Aus für alle Play-off-Hoffnungen. Die Niners sicherten sich dagegen die Teilnahme an der Post-Season.
[–>„Ja, es tut weh“, gestand Towers-Trainer Benka Barloschky (37). „Wir haben im entscheidenden Zeitpunkt nicht die Würfe getroffen, die wir hätten treffen müssen. Im letzten Viertel haben wir nicht mehr den Weg gefunden, Chemnitz zu stoppen. Das wünschen wir uns anders, aber es ist doch die Realtität.“
Die erste schlechte Nachricht für die Fans der Hamburger schon vor dem ersten Sprungball. Basketball-Idol Dirk Nowitzki (46) kam NICHT in die Halle.
Der Star hatte am Nachmittag beim OMR-Festival einen Vortrag gehalten. Auch Towers-Boss Marvin Willoughby (47) hörte ihm zu. Beide sind gute Freunde. Willoughby lebte zu seinen Würzburger Zeiten sogar eine Weile als Gast im Haus der Familie Nowitzki. Am Dienstagabend hatten sich beide zum Essen getroffen. In der Vergangenheit war Nowitzki bei Hamburg-Besuchen regelmäßig bei den Towers aufgetaucht. Diesmal verzichtete er auf einen Überraschungs-Besuch in Wilhelmsburg.

Die Erzrivalen duellierten sich schon in der zweiten Liga – inklusive Feueralarm und Hallen-Räumung. Spätestens seit die Towers den Sachsen 2019 in eigener Halle den Aufstieg wegschnappten, ist regelmäßig Pfeffer drin.
Doch diesmal blieben im Inselpark nach zehn ausverkauften Heimspielen in Serie zum ersten Mal wieder 507 Plätze frei. Und auch die Gäste begannen ungewohnt zahm. Energie, Wille, Entschlossenheit – all das zeigten zunächst nur die Hausherren. Die Towers dominierten das erste Viertel, trafen fast jeden Wurf und gewannen das Duell um die Abpraller unter beiden Körben. Niners-Coach Rodrigo Pastore nahm zwei Auszeiten in zwei Minuten, schimpfte: „Wir sind nicht bereit, zu spielen! Von Anfang an! Einstellung, Einsatz – wir haben nichts! Null!“
Bei den drei Pleiten zuvor hatten die Towers jeweils den Start total verschlafen. Diesmal führten sie nach zehn Minuten völlig verdient mit 29:12.
Im zweiten Viertel arbeiteten sich die Niners langsam in die Partie, versuchten das Tempo zu bremsen, konnten aber bis zur Halbzeit nur kleinere Läufe starten. Auch nach der Pause erwischten die Towers den deutlich besseren Start und zogen zum ersten Mal auf mehr als 20 Punkte davon (57:35/23.).
Aber so leicht geben sich die Niners nicht geschlagen …
MVP erneut orange!: Chemnitzer Urgestein holt BBL-Titel
Schon gegen Rostock (104:100) und Ludwigsburg (104:100) hatten sie große Rückstände gedreht und dann nach Verlängerung noch gewonnen. Und tatsächlich starteten sie erneut eine Aufholjagd. Die Partie wurde härter. 72:67 – die Towers wankten. Und bei Chemnitz drehte vor allem Roman Bedime (23) auf, der mit 15 Punkten eine neue persönliche Bestleistung schaffte.
Zu Beginn des Schlussviertels blieben die Hamburger dreieinhalb Minuten ohne Punkte. Auch, weil ihr wichtigster Mann Brae Ivey (28/17 Punkte) mit fünf Fouls runtermusste. Ausgerechnet der ehemalige Hamburger DeAndre Landsdowne (35) glich zum 80:80 zum ersten Mal aus. Wahnsinn: In den letzten zwei Minuten verspielten die Türme noch das Spiel.
Bester Chemnitzer war Victor Bailey (26) mit 23 Punkten.
Towers-Kapitän Benedikt Turudic (28): „Nach den drei Niederlagen, die sehr, sehr eklig waren, sind wir hier wenigstens im Kampf untergegangen. Aber natürlich schmerzt es sehr, weil das Fenster für die Post-Season jetzt doch sehr klein wird.“
Die Towers brauchen jetzt am Sonntag gegen den Tabellen-Zweiten Ratiopharm Ulm (16.30 Uhr, Dyn) ein Basketball-Wunder und Schützenhilfe von der Konkurrenz, um doch noch die Play-Ins zu rutschen.
