To Oklahoma City oplatila Denveru úvodní porážku a šlo o odpověď ve velkém stylu: Thunder zvítězili 149:106 a vytvořili si klubový rekord v počtu bodů v play off a zároveň vyrovnali rekord NBA v počtu bodů za poločas ve vyřazovací fázi. Jediným týmem, který dal rovněž 87 bodů za poločas, bylo Milwaukee v roce 1978.
New York otáčel už první zápas s Bostonem, ale ve druhém vše nasvědčovalo tomu, že Celtics potvrdí roli favorita. Od začátku měli převahu a tři minuty před koncem třetí čtvrtiny vedli už o 20 bodů. Jenže závěr třetí části New York vyhrál 8:0 a začal ztrátu stahovat. V poslední čtvrtině se pak probudil Mikal Bridges, který byl do té doby bez bodu, ale pak dal 14 bodů za pět minut. A dvě minuty před koncem najednou Knicks těsně vedli.
Opaření Celtics si zvládli vzít vedení zpět 19 sekund před sirénou smečí Jaysona Tatuma. Jenže pak byl faulován Brunson a proměnil oba trestné hody a zařídil Knicks druhé vítězství a také největší obrat v play off v historii klubu. „Stál jsem na lajně a slyšel ten obrovský hluk v hale, ale pak jsem všechno v hlavě odblokoval, soustředil jsem se jen na sebe a oba hody proměnil,“ popsal Brunson.
Celtics to ještě mohli zvrátit, ale Bridges podtrhl dobrý výkon ve čtvrté čtvrtině obranou a sebral míč Tatumovi. „Začali jsme pomalu a vykopali jsme si velkou díru, ale když to bylo potřeba, předvedli hráči neuvěřitelné akce. V koncovce ze sebe dostali to nejlepší,“ ocenil trenér New Yorku Tom Thibodeau. „My naopak nebyli schopni akce dotáhnout tak jako oni. Musíme najít způsob, jak tyto zápasy vyhrát,“ řekl trenér Bostonu Joe Mazzulla.
Nejlepší tým základní části Oklahoma City naopak našla odpověď na úvodní porážku a Denver zcela přehrála. Už v první čtvrtině nastřílela 45 bodů a ve druhé části přidala dalších 42 bodů, což vedlo k vyrovnání rekordu. Už v poločase vedli Thunder o 31 bodů a třetí čtvrtinu vyhráli o dalších 17 bodů. V poslední čtvrtině tak za vedení o 49 bodů už mohli šetřit síly na přesun série do Denveru.
„Věděli jsme, o co dnes hrajeme. Šli jsme do toho s tím, že nic jiného než výhra neexistuje,“ prohlásil nejlepší střelec sezony Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, který dnes dal 34 bodů, přičemž za celý zápas minul jen dvě střely.
Oklahomě se naopak povedlo ubránit hvězdu soupeře Nikolu Jokiče, který zaznamenal 17 bodů, než se po dvou útočných faulech během jedné minuty na konci třetí čtvrtiny vyfauloval. Nejlepším střelcem Nuggets byl s 19 body Russell Westbrook. Oklahoma City měla hned osm dvouciferných střelců.
„Dnes jsme dostali tvrdou ránu. Oni začali zápas s velkou intenzitou, my ne. Ale musíme na to rychle zapomenout. Všichni víme, že umíme hrát lépe. V našem týmu je hodně hrdých lidí, kteří budou chtít doma ukázat, že dnes šlo jen o výjimku,“ řekl trenér Denveru David Adelman.
