
Rodák z Cranbrooku na sebe díky velké produktivitě upozornil už v juniorských soutěžích, v roce 1983 ho jako čtvrtého v pořadí draftoval Detroit. Hned ve své premiérové sezoně vstřelil 39 branek, nasbíral 87 bodů a v hlasování o nejlepšího nováčka NHL skončil druhý. O tři roky později byl v 21 letech jmenován nejmladším kapitánem v historii slavného klubu, v této roli pak otec tří dcer odváděl Red Wings cenné služby dalších 19 sezon.
Během 1514 zápasů v NHL nasbíral 1755 bodů za 692 gólů a 1063 asistencí. Stobodovou hranici překonal celkem šestkrát, jeho maximem je 155 bodů ze sezony 1988/89. Dalších 185 (70+115) jich zaznamenal v play off, v němž za jeho působení chyběla Rudá křídla pouze dvakrát. Stanleyův pohár zdvihl nad hlavu v letech 1997, 1998 a 2002.
Z individuálních ocenění získal desetinásobný účastník Utkání hvězd NHL například Lester B. Pearson Award pro nejlepšího hráče podle hokejistů, Conn Smythe Trophy pro nejlepšího hráče play off, Frank J. Selke Trophy pro nejlépe bránícího útočníka či Bill Masterton Trophy za oddanost hokeji. V roce 2009 byl přijat do Síně slávy NHL. V historických statistikách NHL mu patří sedmá příčka.
Výraznou stopu zanechal Yzerman i na mezinárodním poli, kromě zlata z OH 2002 v Salt Lake City se může pochlubit i triumfem v Kanadském poháru 1984 či dvěma stříbry z MS 1985 a 1989. Na světových šampionátech si zahrál celkem třikrát, dvakrát byl vybrán do All star týmu a v roce 1990, kdy na Kanaďany stejně jako na OH 1998 medaile nezbyla, byl jako nejproduktivnější hráč vyhlášen i nejlepším útočníkem turnaje.
Další úspěchy slavil „Kapitán“ i ve funkcionářské roli, do níž plynule přešel krátce po ukončení hráčské kariéry v roce 2006. Jako viceprezident a zástupce ředitele v Detroitu se podílel na zisku Stanleyova poháru v roce 2008, v pozici generálního manažera dovedl národní tým Kanady ke dvěma zlatým medailím na ZOH ve Vancouveru a v Soči, titul získal i na MS 2008. Od roku 2019 je generálním manažerem Detroitu Red Wings.
