While the NFL has only recently started planting its flag on Black Friday, NCAA football has been there all along, delivering rivalry matchups that go far beyond the bargain bins. And this year, the tradition continues with a bang.
According to Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic, two of the most anticipated SEC rivalry games are set to take place on Black Friday in 2025.

Fans will be treated to a double dose of hard-hitting football, as the Egg Bowl and the Lone Star Showdown are locked in for the day after Thanksgiving.
“Black Friday for both the Egg Bowl and Texas-Texas A&M, the schools announce. Ole Miss at Mississippi State, noon ET. Texas A&M at Texas, 7:30 p.m. ET,” Russo confirmed on X (formerly Twitter).

These rivalry games aren’t just any typical matchups-they’re historical grudge matches loaded with pride, tradition, and high-stakes conference implications.
The Egg Bowl will be hosted at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, where Ole Miss and Mississippi State have traded blows since 1901.
The Rebels lead the all-time series, but the Bulldogs have shown flashes of dominance in recent years, particularly when hosting in front of their cowbell-clanging faithful.
Later in the evening, all eyes will turn to Austin, Texas, where Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium will set the stage for the return of the Lone Star Showdown.
This once-annual battle between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies had been dormant since the Aggies left for the SEC in 2012.
But with Texas now officially in the SEC, the historic rivalry is reignited-and landing on one of the most-watched football days of the year.
Black Friday football becoming a new American tradition
While the NFL has yet to announce its 2025 Black Friday game, college football is way ahead of the curve. Last year, over a dozen college games aired on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and many fans chose to spend the day glued to their screens rather than elbowing through retail crowds.
With games like Iowa vs. Nebraska and Georgia vs. Georgia Tech becoming Black Friday staples, the addition of Ole Miss-Mississippi State and Texas-Texas A&M only strengthens the day’s football slate. It’s no longer just about leftovers and online sales-rivalry football is quickly becoming the true main course.
