Em meio ao primeiro dia de pontificado, uma declaração antiga voltou a circular e chamou atenção pelo tom pessoal e inusitado: sua paixão pelo tênis.

Nascido em Chicago, nos Estados Unidos, Leão XIV também é conhecido por sua torcida pelo time de beisebol Chicago Cubs. Apesar de sua preferência por esportes americanos, sua longa estadia no Peru, onde serviu como missionário agostiniano, influenciou profundamente sua trajetória religiosa e pessoal.

Indicado por Francisco em 2023 para chefiar o escritório do Vaticano responsável por nomear e administrar bispos no mundo todo, o cardeal Prevost passou grande parte de sua vida fora dos EUA. Ordenado em 1982, aos 27 anos, ele obteve doutorado em direito canônico na Pontifícia Universidade de Santo Tomás de Aquino, em Roma. No Peru, atuou como missionário, pároco, professor e bispo. Como líder dos agostinianos, visitou ordens ao redor do mundo e fala espanhol e italiano.
O cardeal entende que o centro da Igreja Católica Romana “não está nos EUA ou no Atlântico Norte”, disse Raúl E. Zegarra, professor assistente de estudos teológicos católicos na Escola de Teologia de Harvard.
Dada a experiência internacional do cardeal Prevost, seu conhecimento de Estados Unidos e seu trabalho na hierarquia do Vaticano, disse Marco Politi, veterano analista do Vaticano em Roma, “se ele não fosse americano, isso o tornaria automaticamente um pontificável, com certeza”.
Descrito como reservado e discreto, Prevost deve ter um estilo diferente de Francisco, que até sua morte no mês passado atraía multidões entusiasmadas e parava para abençoar bebês, mesmo contra a recomendação dos médicos.
