The Cincinnati Reds placed starter Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain and recalled right-hander Chase Petty from Triple-A Louisville.
Greene’s move to the injured list on Friday made him the third Reds player to go on the IL this week, joining rookie Tyler Callihan (broken left forearm) and third baseman Noelvi Marte (left oblique strain). However, the team did get outfielder Austin Hays back from the IL. The Reds also recalled outfielder Will Benson, sending outfielders Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise to Louisville.
Greene, who was among baseball’s best starters in the first month of the season with a 4-2 record and 2.36 ERA in eight starts, left Wednesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves while warming up before the bottom of the fourth inning. Greene had an MRI on Thursday that showed a Grade 1 strain, the lowest level of strains. He said after the game that he’d hoped to avoid the IL, but that didn’t happen.

Greene’s move is retroactive to Thursday, meaning the soonest he would be able to come off the IL would be May 18. If Reds manager Terry Francona sticks with the rotation following the team’s first off day in more than two weeks on Monday, Petty would start Tuesday in the series opener against the Chicago White Sox, one of baseball’s worst offensive teams. If Petty starts Tuesday, Greene would be in line to start against the Cleveland Guardians on May 18, meaning he’d only miss one start.
Meanwhile, the Reds get back one of their most productive offensive players in Hays. Hays began the season on the IL with a left calf strain, played 13 games before going back on the IL with a left hamstring strain. In his brief time on the active roster, Hays hit .365 overall, but also hit five home runs, tying him with Elly De La Cruz for the most on the team and he has done it in 58 plate appearances, 113 fewer than De La Cruz.

Petty, 22, made his big-league debut on April 30, starting the second game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Petty didn’t make it out of the third inning, allowing nine runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. After being sent back to Louisville, he threw six no-hit innings on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A affiliate.
“I know I’m better than how I performed tonight,” Petty said after his debut. “I’ve just got to execute better with two strikes, that’s where I struggled tonight and big leaguers are going to hit mistakes.”
Petty got to two strikes on nine of the 16 batters he faced in the game, but four of the seven hits he allowed came with two strikes.
The Reds also called up Benson, who is making his second appearance with the team this season after starting the year in Louisville. Benson played in one big-league game when infielder Matt McLain went on the IL. At Louisville, Benson hit .206/.406/.402 with three home runs and 11 stolen bases. Benson, who had a 39.7 percent strikeout rate last year for the Reds, struck out in all four plate appearances in his lone game in the big leagues this year. However, at the minor-league level, he has a 28.2 percent strikeout rate with 40 strikeouts and 16 walks over 139 plate appearances.

Dunn failed to get down a bunt in the 11th inning of Thursday’s 5-4 loss to the Braves and then was thrown out attempting to steal, ending the inning. Dunn is hitting .150/.320/.233 in 30 games, including 18 starts in the outfield, playing all three outfield spots. Hurtubise has one hit in 12 at-bats over six games. He started two games in left field, including Wednesday’s victory against Atlanta. He appeared as a pinch runner Thursday, scoring on Rece Hinds’ home run.
