Depois de quatro temporadas, a segunda passagem de Carlo Ancelotti pelo Real Madrid se aproxima do fim. De acordo com o jornal espanhol Marca, Xabi Alonso foi escolhido como substituto para comandar a equipe já a partir do Mundial de Clubes, que começa em junho nos EUA. A data escolhida para a troca do comando foi o dia 25 de maio, quando a temporada europeia se encerra.
De acordo com o jornal, o acordo foi finalizado no último dia 16, quando o Real Madrid foi eliminado pelo Arsenal nas quartas de final da Liga dos Campeões. Naquele momento, Ancelotti e a diretoria do clube conversaram e decidiram seguir caminhos diferentes. Assim, Alonso foi visado como o principal alvo para assumir o clube, enquanto o italiano avançou nas negociações com a seleção brasileira. Nesta sexta-feira, a equipe alemã anunciou nas redes sociais a saída do espanhol.
O italiano é esperado para assumir a seleção até o final do mês, antes da Data Fifa de junho. Ele precisará enviar para a Fifa a lista dos convocados para defender o Brasil nos confrontos com Equador e Paraguai pelas Eliminatórias à Copa do Mundo de 2026. A primeira partida será no dia 5 de junho no Estádio Monumental de Guayaquil, na casa dos adversários, e a segunda ocorrerá no dia 10, na NeoQuímica Arena, em São Paulo.
Como jogador, Xabi Alonso passou cinco temporadas no Real Madrid, e venceu a Liga dos Campeões, duas vezes a La Liga, foi bicampeão da Taça da Espanha e campeão da Supertaça da Espanha. Depois da aposentadoria, ele passou uma temporada, entre 2018 e 2019, como treinador das categorias de base. Em seguida, assumiu o time B do Real Sociedad, onde conquistou o acesso à segunda divisão.
Em 2022, foi contratado para o Bayer Leverkusen, e terminará o trabalho com três taças em três temporadas: foi campeão da Bundesliga e da Copa da Alemanha em 2023/24 e venceu a Supercopa da Espanha neste ano.
