Cleveland jako vítěz Východní konference se po domácích zápasech dostal do svízelné situace a první duel v Indianě potřeboval vyhrát, jelikož ze stavu 0:3 ještě žádný tým v historii sérii neotočil. A podle toho utkání vypadalo. Cavaliers od začátku na domácí tlačili a ve druhé čtvrtině si začali budovat vedení, které narostlo až na 26 bodů.
„Prohrávali jsme 0:2, takže pro nás to bylo buď teď, anebo nikdy. Dali jsme do toho hodně sil. Teď máme jeden den na zotavení a pak se pokusíme sérii srovnat,“ řekl trenér Clevelandu Kenny Atkinson.
Jeho tým dominoval na doskoku (56:37). Vedle Mitchella, který zářil v útoku po celý zápas, byli výraznými postavami i Max Strus s 20 body a také oba pivoti. Jarrett Allen zaznamenal 19 bodů a 12 doskoků a Evan Mobley měl bilanci 18 a 13. Cavaliers se navíc povedlo zastavit hvězdu soupeře Tyrese Haliburtona, který zaznamenal jen čtyři body.
„Máme na něj plán. Naše týmová obrana byla fantastická. Je snadné někoho presovat, když za sebou máte dva vysoké pivoty, kteří jsou připraveni pomoci. Navíc nikdo z nás nekouká na statistiky. Zajímá nás jen vítězství,“ řekl Strus.
„Byl to velmi špatný výkon. Dnes jsme nebyli připraveni. Haliburton měl těžký zápas. Musím se víc snažit, abych ho dostal do lepších pozic a aby měl lepší střely,“ prohlásil trenér Indiany Rick Carlisle patrně s myšlenkami na úpravu herního plánu a signálů.
V Denveru se hrálo velmi vyrovnané utkání. Tým Oklahomy táhl Jalen Williams, autor 32 bodů, který dal posledních devět bodů svého týmu v normální hrací době a poslal Thunder do vedení 102:99. V poslední minutě už ale hosté neskórovali a Aaron Gordon trojkou 28 sekund před koncem vyrovnal.
Prodloužení už ale jasně patřilo Denveru, Thunder se zmohli za pět minut na jediný koš. Nejlepší střelec sezony Shai Gilgeous-Alexander se dokonce přes obranu Denveru nedostal ani k jedné střele v prodloužení. Na druhé straně dal dva koše Nikola Jokič, trojku přidal Michael Porter, Jamal Murray skóroval po zisku a Nuggets už s přehledem dovedli zápas k vítězství.
V útoku se trápily obě hvězdy svých týmů. Gilgeous-Alexander dal jen 18 bodů z 22 střel, Jokič minul všech deset pokusů za tři body a na 20 bodů potřeboval 25 střel, navíc se dopustil 8 ztrát. Oba ale našli jiné způsoby, jak spoluhráčům pomoci. Gilgeous-Alexander přidal 13 doskoků a 8 asistencí, Jokič 16 doskoků a 6 finálních přihrávek. Nejlepším střelcem Denveru byl s 27 body Jamal Murray, Gordon přidal 22.
Hráči Oklahomy měli o 19 střel více než domácí, ale při zakončení byli úspěšní jen z 38 procent. Denver pomohlo k výhře 16 trojek.
