Rory McIlroy has dominated Quail Hollow Golf Club since 2010. McIlroy, fresh off his first Masters victory in April to become the sixth grand slam champion, will move from one major course that gave him nightmares over the years to one filled with fond memories. The 2025 PGA Championship takes place at Quail Hollow Golf Club beginning on Thursday, May 15, and McIlroy has won four tournaments at that club since 2010, more than any golfer at any site on the PGA Tour over that span. How should McIlroy’s course familiarity and history affect how you make 2025 PGA Championship bets?
McIlroy is the 5-1 co-favorite along with Scottie Scheffler, who is coming off a dominant victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in the first weekend in May, in the latest 2025 PGA Championship odds. It was Scheffler’s first victory this season after winning seven events last year, so how should you form 2025 PGA Championship bets? 2025 PGA Championship predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the PGA Championship 2025: Xander Schauffele, the defending champion and a two-time major winner, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Schauffele has racked up nine career wins on the PGA Tour and has made the cut in 62 consecutive tournaments the longest such streak since Tiger Woods’ historic run (142 straight) from 1998 to 2005.
However, Schauffele has recorded just one top-10 finish this season after dealing with rib injury earlier in the year. The 31-year-old has struggled mightily with a putter in his hands, ranking 142nd in putting average (1.772), 156th in one-putt percentage (38.19%) and 161st in strokes gained: putting (-0.475). He’s also been ineffective off the tee, ranking 148th in total driving (228) and 162nd in strokes gained: off the tee (-0.439). He’s not a strong pick to win it all, and there are far better values in the 2025 PGA Championship field.
Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Cantlay, with eight career PGA Tour victories, is in the bitter-sweet conversation of one of the greatest golfers to never win a major. He’s come close with five top-five major finishes since 2019, but Cantlay is still pursuing that elusive major.
After finishing T36 at the Masters, the 33-year-old placed T13 at the RBC Heritage for his fifth top-15 result over his first nine tournaments of the PGA Tour season. Cantlay finished 17th in the FedEx Cup standings last season after three straight years of finishing seventh or better, including winning the 2021 FedEx Cup title. The model is aware of Cantlay’s inability to take home a major title, but at 28-1 odds, that price is too good for it to pass up with Cantlay’s resume in totality. See who else to pick here.
