Caitlin Clark has been ‘cooking’ a better version of herself in the shadows: expert discovers her new power

With the 2025 WNBA season set to tip off next week, the spotlight is once again locked onto Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. After a stellar rookie season, Clark appears to have returned for year two with even more firepower and possibly deeper shooting range than before.

As the Fever wrapped up their preseason slate against the Atlanta Dream, analysts noticed that she’s hitting shots from even farther out.

How Caitlin Clark vs Paige Bueckers change the whole WNBA fan experience

Clark, already renowned for her long-range shooting prowess, reminded the basketball world of her signature style with several deep threes during Indiana’s preseason tune-ups.

One moment, in particular, stood out to Sports Illustrated WNBA analyst Robin Lundberg, who took to social media to highlight what many were seeing with their own eyes.

This week in Culture: The best of the Met Gala and the one filmmaker to look out for at Cannes 2025

“I think Caitlin Clark may have even increased her range. She is shooting the deep ones like they are nothing,” Lundberg wrote on X.

A familiar setting, a familiar shot

Clark‘s standout moment in the preseason came against the Brazil national team in an exhibition game held at Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena-her college home court and the site of many iconic moments. In a poetic twist of fate, Clark hit a deep three from the left side of the logo-the exact spot where she set the NCAA all-time scoring record just over a year ago.

The shot electrified the crowd and evoked memories of her dominant run at Iowa, where logo-range threes were practically routine. But this wasn’t just a nostalgic moment-it was a signal. Clark is not just returning to her old form; she might be evolving.

Last season, Clark led the WNBA with 122 made three-pointers-an extraordinary feat for a rookie. She quickly adjusted to the pace and physicality of the pro game while still playing to her strengths as a scorer and distributor. Now, if her range has truly expanded, the rest of the league will be forced to adapt in real time.

The Indiana Fever have built their identity around Clark‘s dynamic skill set, and they’ve added complementary pieces around her to give the team a better chance at success in 2025. The backcourt has more experience, the frontcourt is more balanced, and head coach Christie Sides has expressed confidence in the team’s growth during training camp.

Newcastle are tuned in, focused, strong – this is an elite team at work

Sandro Tonali is closing in on Romeo Lavia as if he wishes him harm. Newcastle United’s Italian midfielder is scorching forward at a murderous pace, his intent so malicious that Lavia hesitates — and that hesitation is enough. Tonali has the ball now, it is given swiftly to Bruno Guimaraes, who spreads it wide to the right, where Jacob Murphy does what Jacob Murphy does, spinning an exquisite cross back towards the far post for Tonali to bury it.AdvertisementThank goodness, St James’ Park has not succumbed to the horror of goal music, but if it did, the Champions League theme would have been the only choice, although surely it will be ringing out there again soon. Not that anybody would have noticed amid the bedlam and the throb of Newcastle’s grand, old stadium. Despite the ungodly 12pm kick-off time against […]

This WSL season wasn’t a classic – it’s time to make the league more exciting

It was a final-day performance that summed up Chelsea’s dominance of the 2024-25 Women’s Super League. First-year coach Sonia Bompastor’s title winners defeated visitors Liverpool 1-0 thanks to Aggie Beever-Jones’ stoppage-time goal, but it was a game largely without interest or excitement, in what has been a very dull WSL campaign overall.AdvertisementThe atmosphere suggested fans were at Stamford Bridge to see the trophy lift as much as the game; this was Chelsea’s sixth league title in a row, but the first time they had been wrapped up the championship before the last day of the campaign, and the first time they had been presented with the trophy at the club’s 40,000-capacity main stadium.Chelsea have reached a level of dominance where they are no longer competing with the other 11 sides in this season’s WSL, but with their own previous achievements.Beever-Jones’ […]

Nicolas Jackson’s indiscretion underlines why Chelsea need a summer upgrade

If Chelsea want to move up to the next level, they have to find a more reliable striker who will lead the line effectively on a regular basis.Nicolas Jackson has had plenty of opportunities to prove he should be their main man, but when Chelsea needed him to find the target the most on Sunday, the forward found his range in the wrong way by successfully aiming a forearm into opponent Sven Botman’s face and getting sent off.AdvertisementLosing 2-0 at Newcastle United is bad enough, but Jackson will now serve an automatic three-game ban and miss Chelsea’s final two Premier League games of the season against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. Failing to win both of those matches will surely mean Champions League football, via a top-five finish this time, will elude the club for a third successive season.Jackson is […]

Wolves’ summer plans and the impact of a flat performance against Brighton

For the first time under Vitor Pereira, Wolverhampton Wanderers looked like their minds were on the summer. So it feels appropriate for The Athletic to turn its mind there, too, even if Pereira himself refused to do so publicly.“It’s not time to speak about the next season,” he said in his post-match press conference after a 2-0 home defeat to Brighton.Advertisement“It’s time to speak about this season. We need to, and we want to, compete for the next six points and this is my focus.”Yet despite his insistence that the final games of the campaign at Crystal Palace and at home against Brentford are his sole focus, Pereira must now have half an eye on the summer, his first Wolves pre-season and what he hopes will be a successful first full season as a Premier League head coach.Saturday’s loss to Europe-chasing […]

Nuno, Marinakis and the day it felt Forest let Champions League football slip away

This should have been a day of celebration. It felt anything but.Nottingham Forest secured the point that confirmed their return to European football after three decades.
