Na osudný zápas tehdy přišlo přes 11.000 fanoušků, neboť domácí hráli poslední zápas v sezoně a už měli zajištěný postup do vyšší soutěže, kterou hráli naposledy v roce 1937. Byla sobota odpoledne krátce po půl čtvrté a do konce prvního poločasu zbývalo asi pět minut. Stav utkání byl 0:0, když najednou diváci v části stadionu začali pociťovat nebývalé teplo od nohou. Komentátor televizního přenosu John Helm hlásil malý požár na tribuně. Ten se ale během několika minut proměnil v peklo.
Dřevěná konstrukce vzplála i kvůli větrnému počasí velmi rychle. Diváci v panice prchali, ale většina východů byla zavřená. Chyběli pořadatelé, kteří by je otevřeli. Kvůli obavám z vandalismu nebyl po ruce ani žádný hasicí přístroj. Pomáhat začali i někteří hráči a trenéři, lidé házeli děti před zeď, aby jim zachránili život. Hasiči přijeli za pár minut, ale to už z tribuny byla obrovské koule ohně a dýmu. Několik obětí nestihlo ani opustit sedadla, když na ně spadla hořící plachta ze střechy.
Neštěstí vedlo k uzavření dalších stadionů s dřevěnými tribunami a k novým bezpečnostním předpisům na fotbale ve Velké Británii. Stadion ve Valley Parade byl po rekonstrukci otevřen 14. prosince 1986 přátelským zápasem, v němž klub Bradford City porazil England XI 2:1. Dnes je v Bradfordu moderní stadion pro asi 25 tisíc diváků.
Nejtragičtější událostí na fotbalových stadionech ve světě byly nepokoje a panika na Národním stadionu v Limě v květnu 1964, které si vyžádaly 328 obětí a 500 zraněných. Nepokoje vypukly poté, co v utkání olympijské kvalifikace Peru – Argentina uruguayský rozhodčí neuznal těsně před koncem domácím vyrovnávací gól.
