Český tým na turnaj postoupil v minulém týdnu, v kvalifikační skupině skončil druhý za vicemistry světa z Chorvatska. Ti byli zařazeni do druhého koše společně s Norskem, Faerskými ostrovy, Islandem, bronzovými olympijskými medailisty Španěly a Portugalskem.
Nejvýše nasazenými týmy jsou Dánové coby mistři světa a olympijští vítězové, němečtí stříbrní medailisté z OH Němci, francouzští obhájci titulu, Švédsko, Slovinsko a Maďarsko. V posledním koši jsou Gruzie, Srbsko a čtveřice týmů, která postoupila z třetích míst v kvalifikačních skupinách, Švýcarsko, Rumunsko, Ukrajina a Itálie, jež na druhou účast na ME čekala od roku 1998.
Losování se uskuteční v dánském Herningu, který je aktuálně dějištěm hokejového mistrovství světa. Týmy rozdělí do šesti čtyřčlenných skupin, přičemž každá z nich už má jistého jednoho účastníka – Německo (A), Dánsko (B), Norsko (C), Faerské ostrovy (D), Švédsko (E) a Island (F). Z každé postoupí dva celky do další fáze, v níž se ve dvou šestičlenných skupinách bude hrát o postup do semifinále. Češi se na evropském šampionátu představí popáté za sebou, na minulém skončili na 15. místě.
