Ernüchterung bei den Towers – Was ein Apfel mit dem Saison-Aus zu tun hat …

Die Veolia Towers drehten nach dem ernüchternden 64:79 gegen Ratiopharm Ulm noch mal eine Runde um das Spielfeld und klatschen mit ihren Fans ab. Dann war die sechste Saison von Hamburgs Basketballern in der Easycredit BBL sang- und klanglos zu Ende.

Das ernüchternde Ergebnis: nur Platz 13! Vor einem Jahr hatten die Türme zumindest noch die Play-ins erreicht und waren dort in der zweiten Runde in Ludwigsburg gescheitert. Seit ihrem Bundesliga-Aufstieg im Jahr 2019 waren die Hamburger nur zweimal in den Play-offs vertreten: 2021 gegen Alba Berlin und 2022 gegen die Telekom Baskets Bonn. Beide Male war nach dem Viertelfinale Schluss.

[–>„Jetzt gerade bleibt erstmal der Frust, dass die Saison vorbei ist“, sagte Trainer Benka Barloschky (37) nach der Ulm-Pleite. „Wir haben es einfach nicht mehr konstant geschafft, an unsere Leistungsgrenze zu kommen.“ Im Saison-Endspurt war seinem Team der Sprit ausgegangen. Die Towers verloren fünfmal in Folge und stürzten nach einem starken Zwischenspurt doch wieder aus den Play-in-Rängen.

In der ersten Saisonhälfte hatten viele Verletzungen das Team zurückgeworfen. Dazu kam die Doppelbelastung durch den EuroCup. Erst als die im Februar wegfiel, ging es bergauf.

„Nicht die ganze Saison war schlecht“, sagte Boss Marvin Willoughby (47). „Wir hatten mit vielen Themen zu kämpfen. Wenn man sich die Zahlen anguckt und mit denen vergleicht, die wir in den letzten fünf Jahren in der Bundesliga erreicht haben, haben wir eine solide Saison gespielt. Wir sind nur einige wenige Spiele von einem direkten Play-off-Platz weg. Klar hört sich das nach Schönreden an, aber es ist einfach so. Das muss man auch sehen. Wir haben jetzt nicht einen riesen Rückschritt gemacht.“

Aber eben auch keinen Fortschritt.

Vom Etat (5,661 Mio. Euro) her liegen die Hanseaten auf Platz 11 der Liga, der Spieler-Etat (2,1 Mio.) rangiert sogar noch dahinter. Aber Fakt ist auch, dass diese Saison Teams mit ähnlichen finanziellen Möglichkeiten wie Braunschweig (2,166 Mio.), Heidelberg (2,335 Mio.) und der MBC (1,815 Mio.) deutlich besser ablieferten als die Towers.

„Man muss anerkennen, dass wir schon enttäuscht sind“, gesteht Willoughby. „Gerade, weil wir uns vor fünf Spielen selbst in die Position gebracht hatten, es in unserer eigenen Hand zu haben.“

Was dann passiert ist, macht ihm doch zu schaffen, wie er mit einem Apfel-Vergleich deutlich macht: „Dass wir dann den Apfel haben fallen lassen. Und wie wir ihn haben fallen lassen. Das lässt mich schon nachdenklich sein und da müssen wir noch ein bisschen drüber sprechen.“

Die ausführliche Analyse wird gemeinsam mit dem Trainer-Team in den nächsten Wochen folgen. Klar ist für Willoughby aber eins: „Wir haben es nicht hingekriegt, den Druck aufrechtzuerhalten. Auch in der Mannschaft. Es geht ja gar nicht darum, jemanden die ganze Zeit anzuschreien, sondern darum, dass aus der Gruppe heraus dieser Druck aufrechterhalten wird. Und das haben wir gerade am Schluss nicht mehr geschafft.“

Das sieht Barloschky genauso: „Der Wille war irgendwie da, aber wir haben es kollektiv nicht geschafft, dass immer fünf Spieler über 40 Minuten auf dem Platz waren, die immer zusammen den gleichen Plan hatten.“

Diese Woche steigen die Ausgangs-Gespräche mit allen Profis. Am Freitag gibt’s eine Abschluss-Feier mit den Fans. Dann beginnt der nächste Neuaufbau.

Top-Scorer Brae Ivey (28/Vertrag läuft aus) wird nicht zu halten sein. Block-Monster Kur Kuath (26) hat zwar noch ein Jahr Vertrag, wird aber nach einem bärenstarken Jahr voraussichtlich von einem europäischen Top-Klub per Ablöse weggekauft …

„Was ich mir wünsche, was bleibt, das sind unsere Werte und unsere Kultur und das, wofür wir stehen. Das ist das Fundament für alles“, sagt Barloschky. Im Unterschied zu den Vorjahren bleibt immerhin der Kern an deutschen Spielern erhalten. „Ich hoffe, dass genau das den Unterschied machen kann und es nächste Saison einfach schneller geht. Dass wir keine Eingewöhnungszeit brauchen.“

Kapitän Benedikt Turudic (28), Niklas Wimberg (29), Osaro Jürgen Rich (26) und Kenneth Ogbe (30) haben noch gültige Papiere. Leif Möller (21) ebenfalls, er wird nach einer enttäuschenden Saison aber wohl in die zweite Liga oder auf ein College wechseln. Auch Jared Grey (20) hofft auf einen lukrativen NIL-College-Deal in den USA.

„Mit den restlichen Spielern wird weiter geredet, ob wir doch einen Weg finden“, sagt Willoughby. „Aber wir versuchen uns auch, zu verbessern. Es ist ja nicht so, dass wir mit dem Ergebnis jetzt sagen, es ist alles super. Wir sehen einige Spieler auch kritisch, was sie in den entscheidenden Situationen geleistet haben.“

Ob die Türme auch kommende Saison im zweithöchsten europäischen Wettbewerb, dem EuroCup, vertreten sein werden, entscheidet sich voraussichtlich im Juni. Erste Signale vom privatwirtschaftlichen Veranstalter sind positiv – auch wenn die Niners Chemnitz neben Ulm als dritter deutscher Vertreter dabei sein wollen. Barloschky: „Ich glaube, die Euroleague arbeitet gerne mit uns zusammen. Wir haben da in den letzten Jahren eine tolle Entwicklung genommen als Organisation.“

Nur an den Ergebnissen zeigt sich das nicht.
