What began as a special appearance turned into a real endurance test for Pat McAfee. The former NFL player and current sports commentator was officially scheduled to face Gunther at WWE Backlash, and from that moment on, it was clear that he would not emerge unscathed. Facing the so-called “Ring General” was more than a physical challenge: it was a painful lesson in what it means to share the ring with one of the most dominant wrestlers of the moment.
During the fight, McAfee absorbed most of the offense. Gunther was not only relentless with his powerful chops and trademark German Suplex, but also allowed himself to ridicule his opponent between punishment and punishment. Despite the brutality of the match, the commentator stood for almost 15 minutes, withstanding blows that would have knocked down any rookie and leaving everything on the mat in search of respect.

Despite being constantly on the defensive, McAfee managed to snatch moments of hope with attacks that surprised the crowd, including a superkick combination and a moonsault attempt that, although unsuccessful, demonstrated his competitive spirit. The appearance of Michael Cole, who briefly intervened to support him, also created tension and even caused a false fall that put Gunther in trouble for a moment.
However, the Austrian’s dominance was simply too much. Gunther sealed the victory by applying a sleeperhold that left McAfee unconscious, forcing the referee to stop the match. Although he was defeated, the former football player gained something more valuable: the respect of the crowd and of Gunther himself, who offered him a gesture of recognition before leaving the ring.
The following Monday, McAfee shared on social media a shocking image of his chest completely red and covered in marks, proof of what he endured at Backlash. What for some was an uneven match, for him was a demonstration of total dedication, making it clear that he does not need to be a full-time wrestler to stand up with dignity.
