Ex-Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth set for FA return

Former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth is set to make a return to the English Football Association.

The 54-year-old left the organisation in 2019 to join Brighton and Hove Albion having worked as the FA’s director of elite development and later technical director, where he helped develop the men’s and women’s national teams. The men’s technical director at the FA is now John McDermott.

Ashworth’s return in a wide-ranging strategic role is expected to be confirmed this week.

He has been without a role since leaving his position at Old Trafford on December 8, just five months after being hired. He had only started as director of football on July 1 2024 having been placed on gardening leave as part of his departure from Newcastle United.

In his short time at United, Ashworth’s remit was partly to help reshape the club, being placed in overall charge of football performance, recruitment and operations. There were, however, tensions with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose company INEOS became minority owners of the club in early 2024. Ratcliffe was pivotal in the decision for United and Ashworth to part ways in December. A statement from the club stated Ashworth’s exit was mutual.

United’s latest financial results earlier this year revealed his arrival and departure from Old Trafford cost the club £4.1million.

The move to the FA will see Ashworth return to the organisation where he spent over six years. He was credited with playing an influential role in England’s World Cup victories at under-17 and under-20 level in 2017.

Ashworth left in 2019 to become Brighton’s technical director, a position he held until February 2022 when he resigned to join Newcastle as sporting director.

NBA Draft Lottery takeaways: Mavericks stun, Spurs have options, 76ers cash in

John Fanta College Basketball Broadcaster and Reporter <!--> --> It was as stunning as it was wild and unpredictable all rolled into one. On Monday night in Chicago, Nico Harrison and the Dallas Mavericks received an unimaginable gift from the basketball gods. A get-out-of-jail-free card. A second chance to right the ship after their decision to move on from Luka Dončić and trade him to Los Angeles for Anthony Davis, in what has already been determined an all-time swing-and-a-miss by Dallas for a variety of reasons. It is still surreal to say this: the Mavericks, with a 1.8% chance to come out with the No. 1 pick in the draft, won the lottery and made themselves hundreds of millions of dollars in the process because they now get to select Cooper Flagg. It marked the fourth-lowest percentage chance of reeling in […]

MLB was wrong to reinstate Pete Rose: Why nothing has changed about hits leader’s baseball gambling

Getty Images Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday that Pete Rose and 16 others, including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, have been reinstated from the permanently ineligible list. Among the most meaningful changes associated with that decision is that these dead players will now be eligible for Hall of Fame induction by committee (rather than BBWAA vote). For baseball, that was the wrong decision.First, let's review. The facts of the case are these, and they are indisputable: MLB Rule 21(d) states: "(2) Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible."That rule was instituted in 1921 and was posted in every clubhouse for decades. Pete Rose willingly violated the rule both as a player and […]

Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson drama is as avoidable as it is out of control: Dehner Jr.

CINCINNATI — As I walked across the intersection of Central Avenue and West Pete Rose Way outside Paycor Stadium, the day felt like a normal, boring OTA Tuesday in May.That is, until a man in a golf shirt and black hat driving a large SUV sitting at the red light called out my name and waved me over.AdvertisementIt was Trey Hendrickson. He wanted to talk.As I stood at his window in the intersection and a couple of cars came uncomfortably close to my backpack, we moved to a safer spot for Hendrickson to politely make clear his objective of surprisingly flying in for what turned into his media day in Cincinnati. No, this wasn’t the intersection of Central and Rose anymore. This was the intersection of surreal and absurd.Or, given the recent past of the Bengals, just another Tuesday in Cincinnati. This […]
