Nejdříve narazil na Mattea Giganteho, kterého zdolal 7:6 a 7:5. V tie-breaku měl namále, když prohrával 2:4. Jenže pak už nepovolil Italovi jediný bod. V dalším zápase ho čekal nebezpečný Fábián Marozsán. Maďar před tím vyřadil Andreje Rubljova a zálusk si dělal i na český talent. Ten mu choutky překazil po výsledku 6:4 a 7:6.

Menšík prohrál hned první podání v utkání, ale následně sebral servis i protivníku. Druhý v desáté hře, která byl poslední v prvním setu. Ve druhé sadě ztratil vedení 5:3, ovšem ve zkrácené naprosto dominoval.
Díky tomu, že v římském areálu Foro Italico neobhajuje z loňska žádné body, má již nyní jistotu, že se ocitne v elitní dvacítce ATP žebříčku. Bez ohledu na dnešní utkání. Osmadvacetiletý Polák zatím vede nad Menšíkem 1:0 na zápasy, když ho porazil ve druhém kole loňského Australian Open. Pozor: v pětisetovém zápolení. Od té doby si postavení na žebříčku prohodili. Hurkacz figuruje níž, před turnajem v Římě na 31. místě.
