What Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles means for the All-NBA player, the Celtics and the rest of the league
Getty Images Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles tendon, without hyperbole, is among the most consequential injuries in NBA history. Kevin Durant comes to mind as a similarly gifted player to suffer such an injury, but he was almost 31 when he went down in the 2019 NBA Finals. Tatum just turned 27. Only a handful of First-Team All-NBA players have ever missed a season in their 20s. Bill Walton and Derrick Rose were never the same. Bernard King eventually did return to All-Star form, but it took several years and he proceeded to get hurt again immediately afterward.A week ago, a Celtics dynasty was plausible. They were -900 favorites against the New York Knicks before their second-round series began. That number is +400 on Caesars after Tatum's injury news. Just by virtue of playing in the Eastern Conference, their path to […]

Why were Pete Rose and ‘Shoeless’ Joe Jackson originally banned from baseball and not in the Hall of Fame?
Getty Images MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has removed Pete Rose, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and 14 other dead players from the league's permanently ineligible list. The decision comes 36 years after Rose was initially banned and 104 years after Jackson was banned.Rose died in September 2024 at the age of 83, and attorney Jeffrey Lenkov filed a petition to remove Rose's permanent ban. In a letter to Lenkov, Manfred said the permanently ineligible list no longer applies to deceased former players."Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game," Manfred wrote. "Moreover, it is hard to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect than one that lasts a lifetime with no reprieve. Therefore, I have concluded that permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual, and Mr. Rose will […]
