Com apenas um treino antes da partida de estreia como novo técnico do Vasco, Fernando Diniz, não ousou na escalação e usou a mesma formação de jogos anteriores do interino Felipe Loureiro. No entanto, a metodologia do treinador já era visível desde o início da partida, com zagueiros abertos dando opções de passe para o goleiro, na saída de bola, assim como a maior movimentação do atacante Pablo Vegetti, que aparecia para tabelas ainda no meio de campo. No entanto não foi o suficiente para o Vasco, que perdeu de 1 a 0 e mantém a maré de derrotas – quatro seguidas. Agora são nove jogos sem vencer.
Passados os primeiros minutos do jogo, os argentinos começaram a subir a marcação para pressionar a saída de bola vascaína, ao entendenrem a estratégia do novo técnico. Em uma dos tiros de meta para a equipe brasileira, cinco atacantes do Lanús ficaram na linha da grande área do goleiro Léo Jardim, que desistiu da saída com os pés.
Já no caso dos argentinos, a estratégia inicial era atrair o adversário para o campo de defesa e lançar a bola ou para o atacante escorar para o meia ou nas costas da zaga do Vasco, para os pontas ganharem a disputa na velocidade.
Um desses lançamentos deixou o Meia Marcelino Moreno em ótima posição para driblar o goleiro Léo Jardim, mas ao chutar para o gol, o zagueiro Luiz Gustavo salvou a meta cruzmaltina na metade do primeiro tempo.
Após o lance perigoso, o Vasco arrefeceu em campo e passou a errar mais na saída de bola. Não conseguindo construir com mais frequência as tabelas para escapar da pressão adversária.
A volta do segundo tempo começou com um Lanús ainda mais agressivo, ocasionando mais erros da saída de bola vascaína. Em uma das saídas com a bola aérea, aos oito minutos do segundo tempo, a equipe argentina levou a melhor e o camisa 10, Moreno, quebrou a linha defensiva vascaína com um lançamento no ponta-direita, Eduardo Salvio, que cruzou para a área. A bola ainda passou por dois atacantes do Lanús até chegar ao ponta-direita Carrera.
Sem conseguir lidar com a marcação argentina, o Vasco trocava passes lateralmente, sem criar chances perigosas.
Diniz ainda tentou mudar o ritmo do jogo adicionando Adson e Paulinho nos lugares de Luiz Gustavo e Rayan, respectivamente, com isso ele deslocou Hugo Moura para a zaga, com a ideia de tornar a equipe mais ofensiva. Pouco tempo depois, aos 35 minutos do segundo tempo, Coutinho saiu para Alex Teixeira e Tchê Tchê para Matheus Cocão.
No entanto, o treinador nem teve tempo de saber se a substituição fez efeito porque logo depois da entrada dos jogadores, Hugo Moura foi expulso ao tentar impedir o avanço de um atacante, lançado nas costas dele, fazendo a falta. O jogador já havia recebido um cartão amarelo por um carrinho no primeiro tempo e recebeu o segundo aos 38 minutos do segundo tempo.
No lance da falta, Léo Jardim ainda salvou a equipe de tomar um segundo gol.
O próximo confronto do Vasco pela competição sul-americana será a contra o peruano Melgar, no dia 27 de maio. Dessa vez o cruzmaltino poderá contar com a força da torcida já que o jogo será em São Januário.
Mas a equipe terá pouco tempo para desenvolver a metodologia de Diniz. Já neste sábado o Vasco receberá, às 18h30, o Fortaleza pela nona rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, tendo que quebrar a sequência de três derrotas seguidas na competição. Atualmente, a equipe é a primeira na zona de rebaixamento.
Na primeira passagem pelo cruzmaltino, a estreia de Diniz foi com um empate em 1 a 1 com o CRB, pela série B, em setembro de 2021. O treinador foi contratado para ajudar a equipe no acesso à série A, no entanto, a equipe terminou em 15 lugar.
