Juan Soto’s high-profile switch from the New York Yankees to the New York Mets has kept fans and analysts buzzing. Despite the All-Star outfielder’s inconsistent offensive showing during spring training, Soto has been clear about his satisfaction with the decision.
In a recent interview with Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Soto addressed the lingering question of whether he regrets leaving the Yankees.
“I made a decision, and I’m happy that I made it,” he said, as reported by Alex Smith of SNY.
“You look around. We have an unbelievable team. And it’s going to be a good team for a long time.”

Soto’s departure from the Yankees was a major offseason storyline. Mets owner Steve Cohen secured Soto’s commitment by signing him to a staggering 15-year, $765 million deal that could top $800 million.
The Yankees, led by owner Hal Steinbrenner, reportedly capped their offer at $760 million over 16 years. Beyond the financials, Soto was drawn to the Mets by a sense of family within the organization, which was important to the 26-year-old outfielder seeking stability.
Though the decision was financially and emotionally grounded, Soto admitted the move came with difficult moments – particularly because of his friendship with Yankees captain Aaron Judge. Earlier this spring, Soto mentioned missing playing alongside Judge, who publicly called Soto “a good friend” and said he understood the choice as “best for him and his family.”
“It was a tough decision,” Soto shared.
“The Yankees were No. 1…but we couldn’t get it done. But at the end of the day, things work for a good reason. I trust what we’ve done. And we’ll see what happens.”
Spring struggles and an intense Bronx reunion
Soto’s early performance with the Mets has been solid but below expectations for a player with his contract and pedigree. In his first 43 games, he’s slashed .255/.380/.465 with an .845 OPS, along with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. While these numbers aren’t poor, they’ve left some Mets fans wanting more from their marquee signing.
The Mets currently lead the National League East at 28-16 as they prepare for a pivotal three-game series against the 25-18 Yankees in the Bronx. The matchup will spotlight Soto’s return to Yankee Stadium, where reactions from fans could be mixed given his decision to leave.
Soto appears aware of the spotlight and possible boos but seems motivated by the challenge. He suggested that facing his former team might inspire him to deliver his best performance yet as a Met.
