Maďarští hokejisté se v tomto století poprvé podívali na elitní šampionát v roce 2009 ve Švýcarsku, přesně po 70 letech od své poslední účasti. Udržet se jim v něm nepodařilo a tak si na další příležitost museli počkat na šampionát 2016 v Rusku, po dalším pádu se kvalifikovali na mistrovství 2023 a po roční pauze i letos do dánského Herningu.
Dosud ani jednou se ale v základní skupině nepotkali s českou reprezentací, kterou tak letos vyzvou poprvé v historii. Utkání se hraje ve čtvrtek 15. května od 20:20.
Bilance Česko – Maďarsko na MS v hokeji
Přestože se samostatným Českem se maďarští hokejisté utkají poprvé, mají již z dávné minulosti zkušenosti s hokejem československým. S reprezentací Československa se totiž Maďarsko utkalo na světových šampionátech v letech 1931 v Polsku (prohra 1:4), 1934 v italském Milánu (prohra 0:1) a v roce 1937 v Londýně, kde dokonce získali bod za bezbrankovou remízu.
Jeden duel tyto dva národy sehrály také na zimních olympijských hrách v Německu 1936, kde tým Československa zvítězil 3:0, a na mistrovství Evropy ve Vídni v roce 1927, kde českoslovenští hokejisté vyhráli 5:0.

88. ročník mistrovství světa v hokeji je na programu v termínu od 9. do 25. května 2025. Hostí jej Švédsko a Dánsko, konkrétně města Stockholm a Herning.
