Steven Fletcher announces Wrexham departure

Former Scotland international Steven Fletcher is leaving Wrexham after two years at what he has described as “the most magical club I have ever played at”.

The 38-year-old revealed the decision to call time on his spell at the SToK Cae Ras is “not by choice” as the Welsh side prepare for life in the Championship.

Fletcher played a big part in Wrexham’s two most recent promotions, particularly their most recent success when clinching runners-up spot behind League One champions Birmingham City.

He finished the 2024-25 campaign as the club’s joint top scorer in the league with eight goals despite starting just two games.

The need to manage a knee problem explains why Fletcher was largely restricted to cameos from the bench, invariably in the final half-hour.

Announcing his departure on Instagram, the veteran striker said: “In my 22 years stepping onto a pitch, I have never experienced anything like this club. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to come here and fall back in love with the game.”

Fletcher, who arrived on an initial one-season deal in September 2023 that was subsequently extended by a further 12 months, became the second player to announce his release by Wrexham on social media within a few hours.

Earlier on Thursday, goalkeeper Mark Howard also revealed he was leaving when his contract runs out next month. Like Fletcher, Howard was a model professional, keeping 19 clean sheets in 58 appearances.

Wrexham are yet to announce their retained list ahead of the club’s return to the Championship.

Both players have been tremendous servants of Wrexham, Howard having won promotion in each of his three seasons at The Racecourse Ground. He made nine league starts last season and one appearance from the bench, when replacing the injured Callum Burton against Barnsley in December.

Letting two vastly experienced players go suggests Wrexham will be active in the summer window. It also underlines how keen the competition will be to earn a place in the 25-man squad demanded by the EFL in the second tier, especially with Mo Faal and Seb Revan no longer exempt as Under-21s.

Tom Cairney, the Fulham midfielder, has already been linked with a possible free transfer as Phil Parkinson looks to remodel a squad containing several players expected to be deemed surplus to requirements despite still being under contract.

A case could easily have been made for Fletcher to stay. His ‘supersub’ role worked very well in League One, where his class and vision meant the veteran invariably made a big impact when brought on during the final half hour as the opposition defence tired.

Considering the step-up in class Wrexham will have to make next season, such experience could have been valuable.

On the flipside, Parkinson’s squad is top heavy with strikers. No less than nine senior forwards played for the club last season, including Sam Dalby before his loan move to Dundee United.

Dalby is out of contract this summer and expected to leave but Wrexham still boast Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Jack Marriott, Mo Faal, Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin.

This despite Parkinson playing Smith as a lone frontman in the final three months of the season with Rodriguez playing off him, almost as a number 10.

We've got you covered tracking all the rumors from in and around the league:May 15Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga ‘expected to explore’ sign-and-tradeHours after the Warriors were eliminated in Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Athletic reported that the Warriors and forward Jonathon Kuminga are "expected to explore sign-and-trade scenarios." The report also notes there's still a chance Kuminga returns to the bay for his fifth NBA season, but a sign-and-trade would make sense. It would give the former seventh overall draft pick a fresh start in a new place after a 2025 postseason filled with highs-and-lows — being benched for the Warriors' NBA play-in game against […]
