Po týdnu závodění na Giro d’Italia přišla na řadu první horská zkouška. V 7. etapě se ukázali elitní vrchaři, pro vítězství si dojel Španěl Juan Ayuso před Maxičanem Isaacem del Torem, týmovým kolegou z UAE Emirates. V růžovém trikotu však Dána Madse Pedersena vystřídal největší favorit Slovinec Primož Roglič, jenž skončil čtvrtý. Další výtečný výkon předvedl i Čech Mathias Vacek, jenž se až do závěrečných stovek metrů držel v elitní skupině, nakonec se však propadl na 21. příčku. V průběžném pořadí klesl na osmé místo a přišel o bílý trikot nejlepšího mladíka.
