Der Saison-Endspurt in der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga war historisch eng. Vor dem letzten Hauptrunden-Spieltag hatten Mathematiker 65.536 Varianten errechnet! Ein Ergebnis war schießlich – nach einem komplizierten Vierer-Vergleich – das Überraschungs-Duell zwischen dem Vierten Niners Chemnitz und dem Fünften MLP Academics Heidelberg.
Die Heidelberger wären letzten Saison fast abgestiegen – jetzt stehen sie zum ersten Mal seit 46 Jahren wieder in den Play-offs!
„Wenn wir das machen, was wir tun müssen, dann werden wir ein paar Leute schocken“, prophezeit Heidelbergs Michael Weathers (27). Und stellt vor dem Viertelfinale klar: „Wir sind für alles bereit.“

Defensiv-Spezialist Weathers mag Mathe eh nicht sonderlich – und will lieber auf dem Parkett durch unermüdlichen Einsatz zum X-Faktor werden. Denn: „Seit ich klein bin, predigt mir meine Mutter: spiel‘ Defense! Wenn man älter wird, kommt die Offense dazu. Aber Herz, Energie und Einsatz musst du einfach haben.“
Taktische Umstellungen sind von den Heidelbergern nicht zu erwarten. „Wir müssen einfach unsere Art von Basketball spielen“, sagt Weathers. „Wichtig ist, dass wir das schon in den ersten fünf Minuten tun. Denn die geben vor, wie das ganze Spiel läuft. Selbst wenn es am Ende eng wird. Welches Team mit viel Energie begonnen hat, seine Spielzüge am besten ausgeführt hat, hart zum Rebound gegangen ist – in so einer engen Serie werden die Details entscheiden.“

Ein Detail für Defensiv-Spezialist Weathers ist dabei – seine Hose!
Kein anderer Profi in der BBL trägt seine Shorts so kurz wie der 1,91 Meter große Guard.
Weathers muss lachen: „Es hat auf dem College bei Texas Southern angefangen. Wir hatten da wirklich große Hosen und ich mag es nicht, wenn der Stoff übers Knie reicht. Also habe ich sie hochgekrempelt und seitdem mache ich das so. Ich mag es einfach, wie sich der Wind auf meinen Beinen anfühlt. Und wie es aussieht.“
Inspiriert wurde Sprungwunder Weathers dabei von seinem Basketball-Vater, der starb, als sein Zwillingsbruder Marcus (spielt in Polen bei Trefl Sopot) und er fünf Jahre alt waren. „Mein Dad hat seine Shorts auch immer so getragen. Aber damals waren die Hosen ja grundsätzlich kürzer. Ich fand immer, das war ein ziemlich cooler Style.“

Es ist schon vorgekommen, dass Schiedsrichter ihn aufforderten, die Hose „normal“ zu tragen. Auch in der Kabine gibt es Sprüche. Weathers grinst: „Die anderen Jungs machen immer Kommentare über meine Hose. Aber was verrückt ist: Alle kommen zum Training und rollen ihre Hosen da genauso auf! Ich glaube, sie mögen es auch ein bisschen, trauen sich aber nicht, das zuzugeben.“
Das Duell Chemnitz – Heidelberg gab’s diese Saison schon dreimal. Im Pokal-Achtelfinale im Oktober schalteten die Heidelberger die Sachsen mit 78:73 aus. Auch in der Liga gewann dann jeweils das Heim-Team. „Wir haben eine Rechnung offen mit Heidelberg“, betont Niners-Boss Steffen Herhold (46). „Die haben uns im Pokal rausgeschmissen; da sahen wir nicht gut aus.“ Herhold hofft vor Spiel eins der Serie (Best-of-5) am Samstag (17 Uhr, Dyn) auf den Heimvorteil in der Messe Chemnitz. „Wir starten zu Hause mit 5000 Fans im Rücken. Da geht viel.“
Doch Weathers hat keine Angst vor dem Sturm: „Für uns geht es darum, die gesamte Atmosphäre anzunehmen und für uns zu nutzen. Es wird laut sein, es wird wild sein. Aber wir müssen einfach Spaß haben und die Herausforderung annehmen. Jetzt ist der Moment, in dem man noch mal einen Schritt machen muss.“
