Under head coach Steve Sarkisian, the Texas Longhorns have built a reputation for excellence on the football field, but their latest achievement proves they’re thriving in the classroom as well. On May 15, Texas Football proudly announced a 3.31 team GPA for the spring semester-an all-time program record that highlights the balance between academics and athletics within the team.
For Sarkisian, this milestone marks a dramatic turnaround from where the program was when he took over in 2021. At the time, the team GPA sat at 2.33, and Texas struggled through a 5-7 season. But year after year, the numbers have steadily climbed. The Longhorns improved to 2.78 in 2022, then 2.98 in 2023, followed by 3.27 in the fall of 2024. The football team has matched that academic progression with on-field dominance-25-5 record, a Big 12 championship, back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal runs, and a staggering 23 players drafted into the NFL over the last two years.

Sarkisian has consistently preached that discipline off the field leads to success on it. “If we want to be a really good football team, if we want to be a really disciplined football team, we’ve got to be a disciplined football team off the field as much as we want to be a disciplined football team on the field,” he said. His approach has clearly paid off, and the Longhorns are proving that student-athletes can excel in both areas.

A new beginning for he team
Looking ahead, Texas is preparing for another high-stakes season, with Arch Manning expected to step into a leadership role following Quinn Ewers’ departure to the NFL. Sarkisian made it clear that Manning, along with Anthony Hill, must embrace the challenge. “We have players on this team who are going to be really significant contributors this fall, who in their first two years of college football have gone to the College Football Playoff semifinal. They don’t even know any different,” Sarkisian said.
With the Longhorns continuing their upward trajectory, Texas football isn’t just about athleticism-it’s about intelligence, discipline, and sustained growth. The combination of academic and athletic success is catching the attention of NFL scouts, SEC rivals, and Texas alumni, reinforcing the program’s reputation as a powerhouse.
