Corbin Burnes fanned 10 in six innings, Gabriel Moreno had three hits and scored three runs, and the Arizona Diamondbacks extended the Colorado Rockies’ misery with an 8-0 victory on Friday in Phoenix.

Burnes (3-1) gave up two hits and walked three while extending his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 16 over three starts. Three Arizona relievers completed the two-hit shutout.

The Rockies fell to 7-37, the worst start in the modern era (since 1901). They lost their fourth straight under interim manager Warren Schaeffer, promoted from third base coach when Bud Black was fired on Sunday, and have lost 12 of 13 overall.

Eugenio Suarez and Geraldo Perdomo each drove in three runs for the D-backs, who won their second straight after alternating wins and losses in their previous 11.

Arizona’s Corbin Carroll, Randal Grichuk and Josh Naylor had two hits and a run.

Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman had the Rockies’ hits, both singles. The Rockies have been shut out six times this season.

Burnes threw seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday. He has not been scored upon since the New York Mets’ Mark Vientos hit a bases-empty homer in the third inning of Arizona’s 4-3 victory on April 30.

Rockies left-hander Carson Palmquist (0-1) gave up five runs on six hits in four innings in his major league debut after being promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day. He walked one and did not have a strikeout.

The D-backs took a 2-0 lead in the second. Naylor singled and stole second before Moreno drew a one-out walk. Tim Tawa doubled in Naylor, and Moreno scored on Perdomo’s groundout.

Carroll doubled, stole third and scored on Suarez’s sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead in the third.

The Rockies had their best chance when they loaded the bases in the fourth. Tovar singled and Goodman walked to open the inning, and Michael Toglia drew a two-out walk. Burnes struck out Mickey Moniak to end the inning.

Grichuk singled and scored on Moreno’s double to open the bottom of the fourth, and Perdomo drove in Moreno with a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.

Suarez hit a two-run single in the seventh, and Perdomo doubled home a run in the eighth.

The Maple Leafs need to win Game 7 to flip the narrative

SUNRISE, Fla. — Maybe it was always destined to be this way.To finally get past their playoff demons, once and for all, the Toronto Maple Leafs would have to win a Game 7 — their sixth try in this particular era. They earned that chance on Friday night.“This was similar to a Game 7 tonight,” head coach Craig Berube said after a 2-0 Game 6 victory. “We had to win.”Getting there took the game they needed from Auston Matthews, the goal they needed above all. London City Lionesses head to WSL with ambition to compete among the elite

For all of Michele Kang’s influence in global women’s soccer and the high-stakes games she’s jet-setted across the Atlantic Ocean to watch, the investor is still susceptible to the same agonizing emotional rollercoaster that comes with watching a crucial match featuring a team in which she has heightened investment.AdvertisementSuch was the case on May 4, when Kang’s London City Lionesses endured just over 10 minutes of stomach-churning stoppage time to hold their tie against Birmingham City in the grand finale of the Women’s Championship season, which saw both teams fighting for promotion. The Lionesses needed a win or a draw to reach the top-tier Women’s Super League (WSL) next year — a fact which was abundantly clear to Kang, who acquired the Lionesses in December 2023. But when the first whistle blew and the game started, “I totally forgot,” Kang […]
