Los Knicks, finalistas del Este 25 años después tras una paliza de campeonato a los Celtics

Los Celtics, lastrados por la baja de Jayson Tatum, con Porzingis renqueante por un virus, y Holiday Hauser a medio gas tras sus lesiones, se cayeron con todo el equipo en el sexto partido de la serie (2-4). Ni rastro de acierto ni de orgullo, su seña histórica de identidad, en un Madison Square Garden enloquecido que propulsó a los hambrientos Knicks (119-81), llevándoles en volandas a la final de la Conferencia Este 25 años después, en la que se medirán a los Indiana Pacers, el mismo rival que entonces.

En Boston sabían que sin su estrella iba a ser difícil remontar esta serie, pero lo que no imaginaban era ser barridos de forma tan humillante. Mediado el segundo cuarto ya perdían por 20 puntos (47-27), se fueron al descanso 27 abajo (64-37) y llegaron a perder hasta por 41 puntos en la segunda parte (92-51, a 1:49 del final del tercer acto).

La noche más dura del campeón

Fue una de las noches más duras, si no la que más, de la franquicia más laureada de la NBA. Sólo Jaylen Brown (20+6+6) compareció en el Madison. Pero ante el humillante castigo que estaba sufriendo su equipo se quitó de en medio a 2.50 del final del tercer acto (84-51) cometiendo tres faltas personales casi consecutivas. Detrás de él, la nada más absoluta.

Todo lo contrario que los Knicks, con hasta seis jugadores en dobles dígitos de anotación: Jalen Brunson (23+6+6), OG Anunoby (23+10+2+2 robos+2 tapones), Mikal Bridges (22+4+3), Karl-Anthony Towns (21+12) y Josh Hart (10+11+11) y el suplente Miles McBride (10). Todo fue muy fácil para ellos ante un grupo de fantasmas vestidos de verde que se arrastraron por la cancha como almas en pena.

Los Knicks, a todo trapo desde el inicio

Los Knicks arrancaron a todo trapo y con siete puntos de Bridges dieron el primer aviso (11-5). Brown asumió toda la responsabilidad en los Celtics anotando 11 de los primeros 13 puntos de su equipo (14-13). Pero Towns y Bridges lideraron un 8-0, la segunda puñalada de los locales para abrir brecha (24-16).

Los Knicks habían olido la sangre y se lanzaron a la yugular de su famélico rival infligiéndole un parcial de 16-4 comandado por Bridges y Anunoby (42-24). Incluso el triple, su arma predilecta, se le encasquillaba a los Celtics (3/16), que acabaron el partido con un 29,3% (12/41).

Partido sentenciado al descanso

El desplome de los verdes, absolutamente desbordados, se veía venir. Un 2+1 de Hart redondeaba un 23-7 (47-27 a 5:07 del descanso). Los parciales a favor de los Knicks se sucedían sin apenas oposición, y el último arreón con 7 puntos del renacido Brunson, 5 de McBride y un 2+1 de Towns fue mortal de necesidad antes del descanso (64-37).

Los Celtics se marcharon a los vestuarios con su menor anotación de la temporada en una primera parte y con Brown como único salvavidas (18 puntos de los 37 de su equipo), pero también con 6 de las 11 pérdidas de los suyos. El horripilante 33,3% en tiros de campo (14/42) y 21,1% en triples (4/19) metió al campeón en un fango del que ya no salió.

Los Knicks, sin estar finos en el tiro (7/23 triples), habían echado del partido al campeón a la fuerza bruta con su agresividad defensiva y las embestidas de Towns, Bridges, Brunson y McBride, que no levantaron el pie del acelerador hasta atropellar a su rival.

Nula capacidad de reacción

Anunoby amplió la ventaja con cinco puntos en la reanudación (68-37). Dos triples de White dieron aire a los asfixiados Celtics (69-43). Un espejismo difuminado por los triples de Brunson y Hart y un 2+1 de Towns (80-43, a 6:33).
