Inter Miami dropped to sixth place in the MLS Eastern Conference after a 3-0 defeat against Orlando City on Sunday night for the South Florida team’s third loss.

Inter Miami captain and leader Lionel Messi said it is important for the team to stay together just weeks before the Club World Cup.

“These are difficult times, but we will get through it. Now we will see if we are really a team. These are difficult times,” Messi told Apple TV after the match. “When everything is going well it is very easy, but when difficult times come, like now, we have to be more united than ever, be a real team and get ahead”.

The team led by Javier Mascherano has 22 points after a season of six wins, four draws and three defeats, after the previous season they set a record of 74 points, the highest number and highest winning percentage in league history with 22, as well as eight draws and just four defeats, the fewest in a season for a team in league history.

However, this season is not at all like 2024.

“We come from a time of bad results, but we have to keep working and think about the future. With three or four games left in May, we have to finish in the best possible way so that we can face the Club World Cup,” explained the Argentine and captain of the team.

The Club World Cup kicks off on June 14, and is the next big event on Inter Miami’s calendar, but there could be other news in the meantime.

Inter Miami wants to renew Messi’s contract

Coach Javier Mascherano, in an interview with Apple TV before the match, hinted that the team and Messi could be together longer than expected.

Messi, who joined the club on a two-and-a-half-year deal, is only contracted until the end of this MLS season, although the team has made it clear that they want him at least until 2026, when they plan to move to their long-awaited new stadium near Miami International Airport.

Last week, it renewed the contract of Jordi Alba, one of Messi’s lifelong teammates at Barcelona and Miami, until 2027, in what seems to be a sign that retaining Messi could be possible.

“Hopefully in a few weeks we can have news about Leo,” Mascherano said. “I think it will be very, very important for the club, the fans and for MLS”.
