Real Madrid are in talks with Benfica over a move for left-back Alvaro Carreras.

Carreras’ has a release clause of €50million in his Benfica contract, but Madrid are hoping to reach an agreement over a lower fee.

The 22-year-old is keen on a move to Madrid, but will communicate his decision following the Portuguese Cup final against Sporting CP on Sunday. Talks between the club and player are expected to speed up following Sunday’s game, which marks the end of Benfica’s season.

If a move for Carreras is successful, Madrid expect him to be available for this summer’s Club World Cup, which begins on June 14.

Madrid are in the market to add depth to the left-back position this summer, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo among the other names under consideration.

Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez also remains an option for Madrid, who hold a €8m buyback clause for the 23-year-old.

Carreras was in Madrid’s academy between 2017 and 2020, but never made an appearance for the senior side and subsequently joined Manchester United.

He did not make a first-team appearance for United either, and had loan spells at Championship side Preston North End and Spanish team Granada before being loaned to Benfica in January 2024. The deal contained an option to make the deal permanent for €6m, which was exercised by Benfica in May that year.

United do hold buyback clause as part of the deal that saw Carreras move to Benfica, and this stands at €18m with some small add-ons.

The Athletic reported in the DealSheet in January United were weighing up whether to trigger the clause. United eventually signed Patrick Dorgu for €30m from Lecce in their January pursuit of a left-back, but were considering bringing Carreras back to Old Trafford if negotiations with Lecce stalled. Sources close to Carreras had indicated they were not considering a move in the January market.

Carreras has made 65 appearances Benfica, scoring five goals and providing six assists. He lifted the first silverware of his career when Benfica won the Taça da Liga, the Portuguese league cup, earlier this year.

How Ottawa Charge defeated Minnesota Frost in Game 1 of PWHL Finals: Takeaways

OTTAWA — In many ways, it’s fitting that the only local player on the Ottawa Charge would score the first PWHL Finals goal in the city. After a tight first period, it was Rebecca Leslie who opened the scoring 11:34 into the second period of Game 1. Leslie, who signed with the Charge as a free agent this season, only scored one goal in the regular season for her hometown team, but now has back-to-back opening goals in the postseason. 🚨FIRST GOAL OF THE FINALS🚨@PWHL_Ottawa's Rebecca Leslie brings her hometown to their feet with her second goal of the PWHL Playoffs! pic.twitter.com/H5nvPxs46R — PWHL (@thepwhlofficial) May 21, 2025In the end, it was Emily Clark who scored the winner in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Minnesota Frost. Thunder-Timberwolves: Anthony Edwards appears to have had enough of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s perceived foul baiting

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was second in the league to only Giannis Antetokounmpo in free-throw attempts this season, drawing criticism from some NBA corners that he's a "free-throw merchant." Caitlin Clark dazzles with deep 3s in history-making performance, but supporting cast’s no-show dooms Fever

Getty Images Another night, another milestone for Caitlin Clark, who tied Courtney Vandersloot for the most games with at least 20 points and 10 assists in WNBA history on Tuesday. That was not enough, however, as the Indiana Fever fell to the Atlanta Dream, 91-90, due in large part to a no-show from Clark's supporting cast. After Rhyne Howard hit a pair of free throws to put the Dream in front with 9.7 seconds to play, Natasha Howard had two chances at the other end to win the game for the Fever. She missed them both, including an open mid-range jumper from the baseline just before the buzzer.  Howard's misses summed up a brutal night for the Fever's new additions. Sophie Cunningham was sidelined again with an ankle injury while Howard, DeWanna Bonner, Sydney Colson and Brianna Turner combined for just […]

Red Sox’s Walker Buehler ejected for appearing to tell ump missed call was ‘right down the f—ing middle’

Imagn Images In looking at the box score for the Red Sox's 2-0 win over the Mets on Tuesday night, one will find that Red Sox starting pitcher Walker Buehler only worked 2⅓ innings. Generally speaking, in a circumstance like this, that could only mean injury or ejection. In Buehler's case, it was an ejection. And he got his money's worth. It was a 1-0 pitch to Juan Soto with Francisco Lindor stealing second that home plate umpire Mike Estabrook pretty blatantly missed a strike call. He was likely thrown off by the setup of Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez, but the bottom line is the call should have been a strike and instead was ruled a ball. It was a 0-0 game at the time with one of the most dangerous hitters at the plate, so one could easily understand Buehler's […]
