Ange Postecoglou says he wants to build on Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League win over Manchester United and would be disappointed if he were not to continue as head coach.
The Australian led the club to a 1-0 win at San Mames stadium in Bilbao through a first-half goal awarded to Brennan Johnson to secure the club’s first trophy for 17 years.

Postecoglou’s position has been under pressure with the club 17th in the Premier League, but after securing their first silverware since the 2008 League Cup — and Champions League football for next season — the Australian was adamant he was building something.
Asked about his future on TNT Sports, Postecoglou said: “Whatever happens, happens. We’re still building this team. My thought process is trying to build a team that can be successful for four, five, six years. But I’m the manager of the football club, that decision is not in my hands.”
Asked if he wanted to stay, Postecoglou said: “I do. I don’t feel like I’ve completed the job yet, we’re still building. But the moment I accepted the role, I had one thing in my head and that was to win something. We’ve done that now and now we can build on it.”
Postecoglou said in his post-match media conference that there were no meetings planned with the club hierarchy, including chairman Daniel Levy, over his future.
“Relaxed is not the word because I would be disappointed if we couldn’t continue on this path, but it’s not a criticism,” he said.
“I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person’s vision. I remember even when I signed, the club and even Daniel (Levy) said, ‘We went after winners, it didn’t work and now we’ve got Ange,’ but mate, I’m a winner.”
Asked if he was hungry to drive this side forward, he said: “Very. Because we’ve got a young group of players. I’ve got no doubt all those boys tonight, having this feeling will want it again. They’ve climbed the mountain now. It accelerates the opportunities to build a team who can be successful, and play at a high standard for years to come. People can bang on about 20 league defeats, but they’re missing the point of what we’re trying to build, or what I’m trying to do anyway. Tonight can be a great platform for us to kick on.

“I’m super proud of the players. To quote my favourite Australian prime minister, Paul Keating, after an unlikely victory, he said, ‘This is one for the true believers’.”
Postecoglou spoke at the start of this season of how he always wins things in his second campaign and despite facing questions over his future, the success in Bilbao backed up his confidence and was praised by the goalscorer Johnson.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Johnson said of Postecoglou: “He’s done his job. He said he wins in his second yet and he has. If ever there was a time for a mic drop it’s now. I can’t thank the manager enough for the trust he’s had in us. Particularly in the Europa League, he has a really good way of getting us up for it.”
Spurs’ final game of the Premier League season is on Sunday against Brighton.
