Ronny Mauricio is off to a fast start in Triple A, but the infielder’s timetable for a return to the New York Mets’ lineup remains a deliberative process.
Thus, it’s not yet time to count down the days until Mauricio is ready. It may be longer than a matter of weeks, people familiar with the situation said.

In a technical move because his time on a rehab assignment was set to expire, the Mets optioned Mauricio to Triple-A Syracuse late last week. In three games there, he is 7-for-11 with two home runs, including a two-run blast on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Mets’ offense has gone cold at the major-league level. Sometimes in such situations, clubs may consider bringing up a young player for a spark. The Mets can’t do that with Mauricio until they deem him ready. What’s more, a roster need may also be necessary, and the Mets’ group of infielders (Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos, Jeff McNeil, Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuña) all see considerable playing time.

Whenever Mauricio is ready to rejoin the Mets, club officials believe he will be able to help them. In 2023, he earned a late promotion to the Mets after he slashed .292/.346/.506 with 23 home runs and 24 stolen bases in Triple A. He would’ve been in a decent position to claim a roster spot ahead of the 2024 season if not for the injury.
“Where we are right now is we have a player who is medically healthy, who has checked off a lot of the boxes in the rehab progression, has worked really hard to get there,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said last week. “And now we’re working him back into Ronny Mauricio, the baseball player who was on the verge, seemingly, of really breaking out at the major league level. And that takes some time as well.”
Mauricio, 24, missed all of last season after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic in December 2023. He had a second operation last August to remove scar tissue from the knee. He only started appearing in minor-league games on a rehab assignment late last month.

Mauricio’s situation requires patience because of the seriousness of the injury. The Mets need to see him handle a certain volume of games per week. That’s all in addition to regular defensive and offensive development checkmarks that they’d want him to showcase.
Mauricio has yet to play nine innings in the field in back-to-back games. Getting him to the point where he can do so just takes time.
On Wednesday, Mauricio played in his second game in two days, but served as the designated hitter. With Syracuse, he has appeared at second base and third base. Earlier in his rehab assignment, Mauricio played shortstop, his primary position as he moved through the Mets’ farm system over the years. The Mets view Mauricio as an infielder. But a necessity in the outfield could cause Mauricio to spend some time there down the road.
