O ultramaratonista britânico William Goodge, de 31 anos, concluiu uma travessia de 3.800 km pela Austrália em 35 dias, percorrendo o país de oeste a leste. Segundo a BBC, ele saiu de Cottesloe Beach, em Perth, em 15 de abril, e alcançou Bondi Beach, em Sydney, na tarde desta segunda-feira, acompanhado do pai. Goodge afirma ter quebrado o recorde anterior com quatro dias de vantagem.

Durante a travessia, Goodge percorreu cerca de 100 km por dia, equivalente a duas maratonas e meia. Ele enfrentou condições adversas, como tempestades de poeira, perda de unhas dos pés, dores ósseas e alucinações. A travessia pelo deserto de Nullarbor, entre a Austrália Ocidental e a Austrália Meridional, foi especialmente desafiadora.
A motivação de Goodge veio da perda de sua mãe, Amanda, para o câncer, em 2018. Ele dedicou a corrida à memória dela e arrecadou fundos para instituições de caridade relacionadas ao câncer no Reino Unido, nos Estados Unidos e na Austrália. Ao concluir a jornada, depositou flores na areia de Bondi Beach em homenagem à mãe.
O recorde ainda aguarda verificação oficial pelo Guinness World Records. Em 2023, Chris Turnbull completou a mesma rota em 39 dias, e, em 2022, o australiano Nedd Brockmann fez o percurso em 47 dias, também arrecadando fundos para caridade.
Apesar de algumas dúvidas na comunidade de corredores sobre os dados de rastreamento da corrida de Goodge, seu agente afirmou que ele está confiante na precisão de seus registros. Goodge também detém o recorde de britânico mais rápido a atravessar os Estados Unidos a pé, completando o trajeto de Los Angeles a Nova York em 55 dias.
