Bruno Fernandes says he intends to stay at Manchester United next season but admitted he would understand if the club wanted to “cash in” on him.
United were beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, meaning they will miss out on Champions League football for a second successive season. Ruben Amorim’s side are also guaranteed to finish the campaign with their lowest points haul and lowest position of the Premier League era.

Fernandes, 30, has attracted attention from the Saudi Pro League, with The Athletic reporting this month that a lucrative offer from Al Hilal is genuine. The United captain said he will “always have the option” to pursue financially motivated moves, but insisted this is not his main incentive.
“I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” Fernandes said. “I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to great days.
“In the day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it. But I’ve always said it and I keep my word in the same way.
“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cash in or whatever, it’s what it is, and football sometimes is like this.”
Asked by TNT Sports if his side’s failure to qualify for the Champions League impacted his future, he replied: “No it’s not the first time that happens (missing out on the Champions League).
“My point of view has never been the financial side. If I want to go for financial side I will always have the option to go, but that’s not the thing. What I want is to win trophies and be involved in the best competitions — next season we won’t have that chance.”
Fernandes signed a contract extension in August that runs through to 2027 with the option of a further 12 months. The Athletic reported in May 2024 United had met with him to discuss his future, and it was underlined that the INEOS-led regime intended to continue building around the Portugal international, who was seeking clarity on United’s direction and whether their ambition matched his.
He has again been crucial for United this season, winning the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for a record-equalling fourth time after providing 19 goals and 19 assists in 56 appearances across all competitions.
United conclude their 2024-25 campaign against Aston Villa on Sunday.
