Bronzový medailista z březnového halového mistrovství Evropy Staněk měl šanci odpovědět, ale poslal kouli jen do vzdálenosti 19,78 metru a do užšího finále nepostoupil. Porazil jen Itala Nicka Ponzia (20,00) a Poláka Konrada Bukowieckého (19,56).
Z vítězství se poprvé v Záhřebu radoval Otterdahl a narušil nadvládu světového rekordmana Američana Ryana Crousera a Novozélanďana Toma Walshe, kteří si v Záhřebu rozdělovali triumfy od roku 2015. Crouser dnes nestartoval. Walsh v závěrečné sérii vyrovnal Otterdahlův vrh, ale měl o tři centimetry horší druhý nejlepší výkon, takže obsadil druhou příčku.
