Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa: What clubs might want the duo this summer?

Ollie Watkins. Ivan Toney. Are Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa next? When club captain Ivan Toney left Brentford for Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli for £33million ($44.12m) plus add-ons last summer, manager Thomas Frank turned to players already at the club. With 38 Premier League goals this season combined, Mbeumo and Wissa have filled the Toney void brilliantly, contributing heavily to Brentford’s highest goal tally in the Premier League (65).AdvertisementBut Frank has said the club would be open to sell Mbeumo for “the right price” and, presumably, the same could be said of Wissa given both their contracts expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, though there is an option to extend for another year. The possibility of retaining both could be boosted if Brentford finish eighth and claim an unlikely UEFA Conference League space via Chelsea winning the Conference League and finishing […]

NBA Europe is coming but British basketball is locked in a civil war. What will it mean?

There is potentially little more than a year before the NBA launches a new professional basketball league in Europe in partnership with FIBA, the sport’s governing body — and the United Kingdom is prominent in their sights.“I’d say it’s the single biggest opportunity (in Europe),” said George Aivazoglou, the NBA’s managing director for Europe and the Middle East (EME), speaking onstage at SportsPro Live at London’s Kia Oval earlier this month.AdvertisementDetails of the proposed new league are not yet fully defined, but the NBA’s laser-like focus on having teams in major European cities has been clear from the outset. In the UK, London and Manchester are being earmarked for representation in a 16-team competition that could also feature teams from Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Rome, Milan and Istanbul, according to Aivazoglou, when he spoke to EuroHoops. Many of those continental […]

How much better did the Patriots’ new-look offensive line get this offseason?

Editor’s note: This is the first in a three-part series breaking down lingering questions for the Patriots. After the New England Patriots left free agency without signing a new starting left tackle, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that they’d select Will Campbell with the No. 4 pick in the NFL Draft. Of course, that’s exactly what happened.AdvertisementAnd now, mere weeks after the draft, the rookie is already lining up as the team’s starting left tackle at the first few practices of the spring. While Campbell has felt like a sure thing at left tackle for the Patriots, that answers just one of the many questions on the New England offensive line. That’s why we’re kicking off this series with a look at whether enough has been done with the front five, how the unit compares to those around the league and […]

Falcons mailbag: Can they stop the run? Why so many prime-time games?

It’s time for a mailbag, and for once, we’re not starting with questions about the quarterback. Don’t worry, we’ll get there, but we’re going to start with run defense and how new Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has changed his approach dramatically in the last decade.Have you been able to extrapolate anything from Ulbrich’s history and the personnel acquisitions to get any idea of what the Falcons’ defense will look like? Will it all be built on speed and quickness? It looks like Kentavius Street and David Onyemata are the only 300-plus-pound players on defense. Who’s providing the push and clogging up the running lanes? — Jess H.Most offensive plays are three-receiver sets, which means the defense will have five defensive backs (two safeties and three cornerbacks). If we are playing Jalon Walker and James Pearce as edge rushers, that […]

Novak Djokovic returns to Roland Garros nine months after Olympic gold in search of another milestone

The last time Novak Djokovic arrived at Roland Garros in Paris, he did so in questionable health. He had no coach. He was facing questions about how he could possibly win a tennis tournament, having not won one all year.Everyone who follows tennis knows how that ended: the 24-time Grand Slam champion face-down in the red clay of Court Philippe-Chatrier, shaking uncontrollably after finally securing the Olympic gold medal that he had craved for so long by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the best men’s match of the year.AdvertisementNine months later, Djokovic will return to Paris, chasing another elusive goal: the 25th Grand Slam title that will take him ahead of Australian player Margaret Court in the all-time lists. He has no coach. He is facing questions about how he can possibly win a major tennis tournament after an indifferent start […]
