Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has revealed “he wasn’t completely happy” with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s application in training at the beginning of the season.
Alongside discussions where Slot and the right-back, who has announced he is leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, talked about ways to improve his defending, the Dutchman also highlighted that he wanted to see more from him at certain moments in sessions.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Mohamed Salah said that he also spoke with Slot and was shown clips by the new head coach about his approach to training.
Slot joked that his revelation could be a “gift” for Xabi Alonso, with both the former Liverpool midfielder and Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to officially join Real Madrid this summer.
“I think Mo already said a few things about why he was in my office in pre-season and there were similar reasons why Trent was in my office in the beginning of the season,” Slot told reporters before chuckling. “Maybe he’s said it himself, he’s going to leave either way so why not tell it, maybe it is already the first gift I can give Xabi Alonso.
“I wasn’t completely happy with every single minute how he was on the training ground. In my opinion in certain moments he could do a bit more to say it mildly and that’s what we talked about.
“Combined with that I said to him that he’s a much better defender than everybody tells you but unfortunately you don’t show it all the time so it is a part of you game you need to improve. If you are at it and focused on concentrating there are not many players that can go around him because he is fast, agile and he has a great mentality.”

The topic arose after Slot was asked if he had spoken to the right-back about the reaction he has received in recent weeks. In the last home game against Arsenal, which came following Alexander-Arnold’s announcement, the 26-year-old was booed by sections of the fanbase.
Slot confirmed that has has spoken to the defender, an opportunity he has that supporters – who he referred to as people with a purple bin, an iconic symbol associated with being from Liverpool – do not.
“I talk to most players not on a daily basis but a lot and especially if there are circumstances why I should talk to them a bit more often,” said Slot. “It is clear that in Trent’s situation there are circumstances for me to talk more to him than with Virgil (Van Dijk) for example.

“I am talking to him and that is the biggest difference between me and all the ones that have a purple bin; I speak to the human being Trent Alexander-Arnold every day and that, combined with winning something together, creates a different bond than maybe the fans have with him. I do talk to him, quite a lot actually.”
It will be a title celebration at Anfield on Sunday as Liverpool will lift the Premier League in front of supporters for the first time following their match against Crystal Palace.
Slot admitted he is yet to decide on how involved the defender will be, however he called on the fan base to create an atmosphere like they did on the day the title was sealed against Tottenham Hotspur last month and that everybody – including Alexander-Arnold – deserves to be involved.
“I think this should be a day that everybody is going to enjoy,” said Slot. “It has been 35 years, Liverpool fans are waiting for this moment and we have set the example against Tottenham. I don’t think I have ever seen a celebration in a nicer way done than that day.
“I have met multiple people in the last few weeks who have told me that they have been going to Anfield all of their life and they have never felt a day that was more special than that one Tottenham at home. I am hoping we can add a moment like this to it.
“Everyone in the stadium deserves to be there, the fans, the staff and also the players. One of my players is Trent, so he definitely deserves to be there because he has been part of an incredibly successful season and incredibly successful years at this club. I can only hope that we do it one more time that we did against Tottenham and I have a lot of trust in our fans to do the same again.”
