Thomas Tuchel will use England’s time in Catalonia next month to start preparing his players for the temperatures they will face in next summer’s World Cup.
England play Andorra in a World Cup qualifier in Barcelona on June 7, and will spend their time before then training outside Girona, rather than at St George’s Park.

Tuchel knows that England will face difficult conditions of heat and humidity at the World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico next summer.
“Suffering is one of the headlines for this World Cup”, as Tuchel put it on Friday. He will go to the Club World Cup in the U.S. next month to assess how difficult it is to play games in the afternoon heat in places like Miami. But before then he will assess how his players perform in the heat of north-east Spain.
“In the camp we will test the players, how they react to heat,” Tuchel explained in his squad announcement press conference on Friday.
“In a very professional level, we will increase our knowledge of how to cool players down, when to take a cooling break, how to individually cool players down, what helps each players. So there is a level of support going on at the highest level from the federation (FA), which I am very happy about. As it allows me to focus on football.”
Tuchel is still in an intense learning phase ahead of next summer’s World Cup. And part of that concerns what it will be like during next summer’s men’s World Cup. With this summer’s Club World Cup being a perfect learning opportunity beforehand.
“Our team is on it, the FA provides support on the highest level to the conditions,” he said. “I am curious to go to the Club World Cup and see the stadiums and actually feel the heat and then we will go from there. That is why it is important to see matches in America, in Miami at 3pm. I will see that, how it looks.
“We need to understand how to cool players down and what to drink. I have done pre-season in Orlando (in 2022) and I will be very surprised if we do not suffer. The guys, no matter how old they are, they need to get fit because this World Cup is going to be a tough one.”
Tuchel has also told Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is in the squad for the next two games, that he cannot only rely on the creative side of his game, and that defensive concentration is paramount.

“I can see that sometimes he relies heavily on his offensive contributions, and gives not so much emphasis on the defensive discipline and effort,” Tuchel said.
“This major impact that he had for Liverpool over so many years, if he wants to have this impact in the English national team, then he has to take the defensive part very, very seriously. Because in qualifying football or tournament football, one defensive error, the one moment where you are not 100 per cent awake, can be decisive, can be the moment where you pack your suitcases and go home.”
