Lotyšský server sportacentrs.com, který informaci přinesl jako první, uvádí, že verdikt IIHF padl po komunikaci s Mezinárodním olympijským výborem. Sport.cz požádal o vyjádření seniorního viceprezidenta IIHF Petra Břízu, ten zatím nereagoval.
Zatímco světových šampionátů se Rusko a Bělorusko neúčastní od roku 2022 (oficiálním důvodem podávaným IIHF je strach o bezpečnost všech aktérů), o startu Rusů pod pěti kruhy v Miláně nebylo jasno ani třičtvrtě roku před startem vrcholné akce příští sezony.

IIHF měla připraveny dvě verze základních skupin – s Ruskem a bez něj. V prvním případě by český nároďák byl ve skupině B s Finskem, Německem a Dánskem. Při absenci sborné ale budou reprezentanti ve skupině A s Kanadou, Švýcarskem a Francií.

Právě Francie, která před pár dny spadla z elitní skupiny A mistrovství světa, nahradí na hrách v Miláně Rusko, aby byl zachován počet dvanácti startujících výběrů.
Hokejového turnaje na zimních olympijských hrách (od 11. do 22. února 2026) se po dvanácti letech zúčastní i ti nejlepší hráči z NHL. Naposledy startovali v roce 2014 v Soči, poté v Pchjongčchangu ani Pekingu nikoli.
