Real Madrid have confirmed Carlo Ancelotti will leave the club at the end of the season after being appointed Brazil’s new head coach.
The Brazil Football Federation (CBF) confirmed Ancelotti’s appointment a fortnight ago and he will start work on May 26.
The 65-year-old had a year left on his terms at the Bernabeu but a deal was confirmed following cordial talks between all parties, facilitated and led by Diego Fernandes on behalf of the CBF.

His final game in charge will be against Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
A club statement on Friday read: “Real Madrid C. F. and Carlo Ancelotti have reached an agreement to end his time as Real Madrid coach. Our club would like to express its gratitude and affection to one of the great legends of Real Madrid and world football.

“Carlo Ancelotti has led our team through one of the most successful periods in our 123 years of existence and has become the coach with the most titles in our history: Three European Cups, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, two leagues, two Copa del Reys and two Spanish Super Cups. In total, 15 titles during the six seasons in which he has belonged to our club.”
Club president Florentino Pérez added: “Carlo Ancelotti is now part of the great Madrid family forever. We are proud to have been able to enjoy a coach who has helped us achieve so much success and who has also represented the values of our club in an exemplary manner”.
“Today we go separate ways again. Today again I take in my heart every moment lived in this wonderful second stage as Real Madrid coach,” Ancelotti said in a post on social media. “It’s been unforgettable years, an incredible journey full of emotions, titles and, above all, the pride of representing this shield.
“Thanks to the president Florentino Perez, to the club, to my players, to my staff and, above all, to this unique fan that has always made me feel like one of them. What we have achieved together will remain forever in the memory of Madridism, not only for the triumphs, but for the way we achieved them. The magic nights of the Bernabéu are already football history.
“Now a new adventure begins, but my bond with Real Madrid is eternal. See you soon Madridistas.”
The Athletic has reported talks have taken place between the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso and Madrid during this season over replacing Ancelotti. Club sources at Madrid are confident that Alonso will join to lead the team at the revamped Club World Cup. Madrid begin their Club World Cup campaign against Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal on June 18 in Miami.

The former Madrid midfielder announced on May 9 he would leave Leverkusen at the end of the season. He led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title and an unbeaten domestic season during the 2023-24 campaign, followed by a second-placed finish this season.
Ancelotti took charge of Madrid in June 2021 for his second spell at the club after resigning from Premier League side Everton. He won two La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two Spanish Super Cups and two Copas del Rey across the two stints, but is set to miss out on a trophy in his final season in charge. Sunday’s 4-3 Clasico defeat to Barcelona leaves Madrid trailing their rivals by seven points at the top of La Liga with three league games remaining.
The Athletic reported on April 28 that Ancelotti was set to leave the club to take up the Brazil role on a one-year contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He has been the subject of long-term interest by the CBF. It had previously approached Ancelotti over the men’s job in 2022 and 2023, though he then renewed with Madrid until June 2026 in December 2023, and renewed its interest after dismissing Dorival Junior in March.
Ancelotti’s future has been a topic of discussion throughout the 2024-25 campaign as Madrid struggled domestically and in Europe. His impending exit became clear following Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona, which was just under two weeks after they were knocked out of the Champions League following a 5-1 aggregate defeat by Arsenal in the quarter-final.
Ancelotti’s side have been defeated in all four matches against Barcelona this season: a 4-0 La Liga defeat in October, a 5-2 loss in January’s Supercopa de Espana final, 3-2 after extra time in the Copa del Rey final last month and Sunday’s 4-3 league loss.
‘One of the best coaches in the club’s history — if not the best’
Analysis by Real Madrid correspondent Guillermo Rai
After six years and two spells, Carlo Ancelotti leaves as the most successful coach in Real Madrid’s history with 15 titles.
‘La Décima’ (the tenth) Champions League in 2014 changed his destiny forever thanks to a Sergio Ramos goal that returned Madrid to success in Europe’s premier club competition.

But it has been in the Italian coach’s second spell — which began in 2022 — where he has truly become a club legend.
‘La Decimocuarta’ (the fourteenth) Champions League was surely the most difficult to achieve, but the one enjoyed the most because from that moment on the spirit of comebacks, of unimaginable things, reigned again at the Bernabeu.
His character has faithfully combined with the values of the club to the point it was often difficult to foresee an end and it seemed that they were going to stay together for the rest of their lives.
It would not be surprising that he could return to the clun in the future, but he is no longer expected to do so as coach.
In any case, his three Champions League titles are already in the club’s museum and will serve as proof that he has been one of the best coaches in the club’s history — if not the best.
