The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation has become a compelling storyline this offseason, but now an answer could be close as Shedeur Sanders finds himself poised to land the gig.
Since the era of Bernie Kosar, Cleveland has sought a franchise quarterback capable of transforming potential into consistent success but landed in disaster with Deshaun Watson.
Shedeur Sanders impresses Browns coach: ‘He’s working like crazy!’
So could Sanders, a fifth-round pick taken 144th overall, finally be that figure at the Huntington Bank Field? That remains unclear, but it does seem as though he will win a shot.
“I’ll say Shedeur Sanders will be the starting quarterback for the Browns entering the season,” Domonique Foxworth told the Get Up podcast, tipping both the 23-year-old and Dillon Gabriel to be assessed with 2026 in mind.
Is Detroit Lions 2025 Schedule Really That Tough?
“There’s a chance that they’ll be at the top of a good quarterback draft again next year,” Foxworth continued, suggesting if neither of them light up the NFL field then the Browns may already find themselves sharply moving on.
Can Sanders actually become the starter?
Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion, brings a unique blend of collegiate accomplishment and raw potential after passing for 4134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns in 2024/25.
But he faces challenges from his fellow rookie, as well as the veteran Joe Flacco and also Kenny Pickett, a second year, who also remain in the mix in Cleveland.
With several candidates, the Browns‘ quarterback room has become, in Foxworth’s words, akin to a “Black Friday sale, crowded and chaotic.”
Yet Sanders‘ pedigree and work ethic set him apart, even if his draft status was initially underestimated, however he still does face a tough contest if he wants to land the starting spot.
Flacco is one of the finer quarterbacks of his generation and even became the Super Bowl XLVII MVP. Most recently, he had a strong campaign with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024/25 suggesting he still has talent to give even as age slips away.
“It’s funny because at practice I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m really with Joe Flacco right now. We’re on the same team.’ That’s cool,” Sanders said of the crowded Browns‘ quarterback and the legacy it possesses.
Despite some pre-draft critiques labeling him “arrogant,” Sanders‘ confidence is often viewed as necessary for success at the professional level.
His rapport with teammates such as running back Quinshon Judkins highlights his leadership potential and growing integration within the team culture.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski has praised Sanders‘ maturity and understanding of the NFL’s demands, thus suggesting the youngster is on the right side of the 43-year-old.
The endorsement from Stefanski adds weight to the speculation that Sanders could be entrusted with the starting role once training camp concludes ahead of the 2025/26 NFL season.
